Oklahoma Library Association
University and College Division
Annual Report
July, 2003 - April, 2004
2003-2004 has been a busy and productive year for the
University and College Division. Our major project for the year
was coordinating the series of workshops on Copyright in the
Digital Age presented by Dr. Laura Gasaway of the University of
North Carolina Law Library. Working with Rose State College
which generously underwrote part of Dr. Gasaway's speaker fees
and with our co-sponsor, the Government Documents Roundtable, we
were able to offer the workshop at three different sites:
Norman, Stillwater, and Midwest City. Dr. Gasaway provided an
in-depth discussion of the state of copyright law in the
twenty-first century and gave participants an SO-page workbook
replete with valuable information on the law and other
resources. The workshop series was a great success, and UCD will
consider offering more programming on the issue of copyright in
upcoming years. I would personally like to thank the many
members of UCD, GODORT, and other OLA members who helped make
this workshop a success through their volunteer efforts and
contributions to the planning process: Barbara Miller, Sharon
Bish, Lauren Donaldson, Cathy Blackman, Marla Roberson, Anna
Moore, Caroline Dulworth, Michele Seikel, Cokie Anderson, Helen
Clements, Kay Bost, Tamra Stansfield, Elaina Stewart, Sharon
Saulmon, and Melissa Huffman, who did the initial planning when
she was UCD chair.
For OLA Conference in 2004, UCD teamed up with the Membership
Committee to co-sponsor the Contributed Paper and Poster
Sessions. Cathy Blackman and Barbara Ray headed up the selection
committee. UCD is also offering its traditional program on
Buried Treasures in Oklahoma Libraries. This year we are
showcasing Tulsa-area collections. Our speakers are Theresa
Miller, Director of the Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers,
Cindy Driver of the Greenwood Cultural Center, and Shirley Land
of the Jay Allan Myers Library at Temple Israel. UCD is planning
a gift basket for the silent auction at Conference to raise
money for scholarships. The theme this year is "Telling Big Fish
Stories" (fishing and fish-related items).
This year Mary Evans once again undertook the responsibility to
do the annual salary survey of academic librarians. She handled
the mailings electronically and did a wonderful job compiling
the results. Charles Brooks continued to be Webmaster for UCD,
hosting our site on the University of Tulsa's server. Charles
also provided assistance with the Paper and Poster Session
submission forms and with the online salary survey. UCD has a
chat room set up in a WebCT course on OSU's servers that we will
use in the future to faciliatate online meetings in order to
ease the burden of travel time. For next year, UCD is planning
to offer a workshop on Interlibrary Loan. Marc Carlson and Cathy
Blackman are assisting me in planning the workshop which we will
tentatively hold in November 2004.
I would also like to thank Thomas Thorisch for his diligence in
taking minutes at our meetings. Our chair-elect Evlyn Schmidt
has also provided many valuable contributions to the planning of
UCD activities this year. I will look forward to working with
her next year as UCD continues to address the challenges facing
academic librarianship in Oklahoma.
