Conference evaluations

Cokie said that we got rave reviews for the Buried Treasures program this year. The audience wished there had been more time for the speakers. The Demonstration Sessions were also highly rated. We didn't have any evaluation forms returned for the paper session, but it was very lightly attended, according to Linda. Cokie stated that we should think seriously about whether we should continue to block out time for them at conference. Or perhaps we should suggest a theme, such as trends in the reference world.

Workshop planning

The topic for the Oct. 19th workshop is My Space and Facebook pages. It will be entitled Taming Social Networking Sites: Facebooks & My Space. Possible sites include the classroom building lab at OSU, since it will be held during Fall Break, or the Career Tech site. We could offer any interested students the OLA rate. Victor Baeza or Dan Chaney of OSU are possible speakers. It will be a full-day workshop, 9:00-3:00, with a one-hour lunch.

The morning session will cover why social networking appeals to millennials, and how they use the technology. It could be entitled Social Networking and Millennial Expectations. In the afternoon, there will be breakout sessions for Facebook & My Space. We'll ask participants to decide which breakout sessions they want to attend during the workshop.

The flyer will be for one workshop, but will mention the rest of the series, which will be titled Reaching the Millennials: taming their technology. The theme is social networking and virtual library services. The Feb. 29th workshop will be on instant messaging and wikis. Speakers will be Robin and Cathy for instant messaging, and Roy Degler for wikis, because he developed a reference wiki for OSU-Stillwater. The presentation on instant messaging will be in the morning, and wikis in the afternoon. Robin and Roy will work on a flyer for that one. Robin will also check with OSU-Tulsa for an available computer lab. If not, Michele will contact UCO.

For the preconference, Cokie recommended Michael Stevens. He would be an especially good speaker on the topic of low- or no-cost resources, like hosted bookmarks. But we not have internet access, so it couldn't be hands-on.

The final workshop in the series will be held Aug. 8, 2008. It will be titled: Podcasting, RSS feeds, & virtual worlds. We'll start with podcasting for library tours, and go on to bibliographic instruction on 2nd Life, then blogging. Victor Baeza and Roy Degler can work on the podcasting. There.com is an alternative to 2nd Life. Adri Edwards-Johnson would be a good speaker about blogging. She could also discuss cell phone technologies.

Conference Programs

Possible Buried Treasures speakers are: Cherokee Heritage Center, Tahlequah (Cherokee.org), Woolaroc Museum, Marlin Mansion, Ponca City, Ponca City Public Library Chinese Art collection (Evlyn will check into this one)

The Demonstration Sessions will again include powerpoints, but not an internet connection. We will encourage library school students to do demonstrations, but we won't hold a paper session this year. We will try to get them to send in their powerpoints ahead of time, and schedule 1.5 hour sessions, so there can be time for questions.

Next Meeting

Tuesday, July 10th @ 2:00. It will again be a videoconference, and we'll try to contact Marc Carlson at TU so see if we can get the TU members to connect.
