Committee Reports

Workshop Committee (Sheila Johnson)

Internet filtering workshop was agreed to early and cut across all types of libraries and it covered a range of issues and consequences. The goal was to make money so speakers were recruited from within. Great crowd with a total of 92 enrolled and the workshop was very successful. June Lester from the O.U. Graduate Library School was a presenter along with a panel of librarians that represented a cross-section of filtering and not filtering as well as types of libraries. Deborah Engel monitored the session and she was the vendor representative. John Corbett from ODL covered the software available. The food and facilities were both rated good. The revenue from the workshop was approximately $3,000. Committee members worked hard and the evaluations were relatively good. The registration from this workshop was the highest attended workshop outside a conference.

Conference Program Committee (Judy Wilkerson)

Judy was not able to attend but sent overview. The conference programs on distance education went very well. Phil Moss from the Regents Office had a large attendance and was well received. The Western Governors presentation had a lot of interactive discussion and went well. The evaluations for both have not been seen yet. Kudos to R. D. Bell for expert equipment troubleshooting.

WWW Committee (Helen Hill)

Helen Hill did not attend and we do not have a web page yet. There was discussion about what we want to do on the Web for the University and College Division.

New Business

Introduction of 1998-1999 officers

Tom Biggs from Tulsa University is the new chair of the University and College Division. The vice chair is Rowdy Williams from Rogers University, Claremore Campus and the secretary is Alan Lawless from Rogers University, Claremore.

Planning for next year

Possible topics for the next UCD workshop as well as the OLA conference next March in Enid were discussed. Charles Brooks, outgoing chair, led a discussion on The University and College Division Report of the Ad Hoc Planning Committee (a.k.a. The Gang of Nine). Charles Brooks recommended that the Web Resources Workshop be included as either a workshop or at the OLA conference. Another workshop topic suggested was the Copyright/Intellectual Property in an Electronic Environment topic. An additional suggestion made was to perhaps dovetail both of these topics together for just one workshop. It was a consensus that these two topics were the best for a workshop in the coming year. HTML workshop for a conference workshop was problematic in Enid because we may need a hands-on workshop. We could still have HTML at the conference but we would need to use overheads. We could have the HTML workshop at the OSU lab during certain months. Another possibility mentioned by Sheila Johnson was that we have a demonstration site of mounted filtering programs and a hands on workshop to compare results. The school librarians are very much interested in this and maybe we could set up as a trial at OLA. Another possibility mentioned was that the Web Resources Workshop could be a preconference as well.

For the next OLA conference in Enid the suggestion was made to have a session for contributed papers (good for academic librarians in the state). That would be a new feature. Bringing back poster sessions was suggested as well.

Closer cooperation with OK-ACRL was brought up in the July meeting but did not receive much response for doing this. It was noted that the OLA-UCD chair needs to attend the OK-ACRL meetings.

Another topic for a possible conference in the fall is distance education. Perhaps we could have a national keynote speaker talking about different aspects like what others are expecting from us (students, faculty, administration). This would also include breakout sessions which would cover the nitty gritty responses to distance education. The idea brought up is that OLA-UCD and OK-ACRL could jointly officially co-sponsor this workshop in the fall, perhaps on November 6. Also there is a possibility of some support from ACRL national as well for this topic.

The Web site is not running yet. Hopefully the committee for the Web site could be reconstituted and eventually get the material to Andy Peters (who prefers the HTML format). We might also need a Web editor as well. The officers will need to decide on the direction for this Web site.

Charles made the recommendation that consideration be made to give the ad hoc committees a permanent status with a chair for each committee. These committees include the workshop planning committee, conference program planning, electronic communication, special projects, nominations and salary survey. In order to do this we might have to change the by-laws to accomplish the above objective.

Additional suggestions were to plan meetings in advance, name meeting places in advance, and continue using email.

The Torch is Passed

Charles "passed the torch" to Tom Biggs. Tom mentioned that he likes to delegate and please feel free to email him if necessary. Tom's email address is thomas-biggs@utulsa.edu.
