Come see our 10-minute lightning round presentations. Introduced by Kristi Kohl, OUHSC, they showcase library events, programs, and research going on all around the state.

Christine Edwards, University of Central Oklahoma

UCO piloted a roving reference program this semester. Sometimes called librarians on location or satellite librarians, this is where librarians go to buildings on campus to provide services. Initial findings are positive, especially with faculty interactions. I will describe the process we went through to propose such a program and the results thus far, perhaps encouraging others to attempt such an outreach.

How long has that sweater been there? Has anybody tried to call this patron? Is there still food in that lunch bag? Learn a lesson from the hotel industry about how to get that mountain of stuff in the corner of your workroom under control.

Elsie Purcell, Connors State College - Muskogee Campus Library

As an MLIS student in my last semester who also works for a small college library, I understand some of the challenges facing librarians when it comes to the issues of training and staff development. As part of my collection development class, I researched and presented a five-minute poster talk about this topic. With smaller staffs, it is important to hire, train, and retain student workers as well as develop and increase the skills of library paraprofessional staff. I will discuss resources available to integrate training into current workflows; this pays off in future time savings and a staff that is more invested in the library’s goals overall. Some of the items I will touch on are: campus student groups, vendor resources, maximizing available training, listservs, and state library departments.

As our workforces become more diverse, we face a greater challenge and problem -- how to successfully manage increasingly diverse interactions. To address this concern, organizations are applying the framework of cultural intelligence (CQ). Cultural intelligence (CQ) is a person’s capability for successful adaptation to new cultural settings, that is, for unfamiliar settings attributable to cultural context (Earley & Ang). It is only recently that cultural intelligence has surfaced as an element that can increase job performance, personal well‐being, and profitability. Cultural intelligence isn’t specific to a particular culture – rather it focuses on the capability to function effectively in culturally diverse situations. Cultural intelligence is a new concept, officially defined in 2003. It is a globally recognized way of assessing and improving effectiveness for culturally diverse situations. It’s rooted in rigorous, academic research conducted by scholars around the world. Leading organizations in business, education, government, and healthcare are adopting CQ as a key component of personnel development and competitive advantage.

This presentation will be giving supervisors and student workers the tools to avoid some of the drama due to miscommunication, misunderstanding, and the feeling of powerlessness that sometimes cause the breakdown of communication and harmony in the workplace. The goal is to provide a candid, but tactful communication method for supervisors and student workers to help them engage in conducive workplace conversations, while maintaining relationships.
