You Can Teach Coding with Scratch!
Sponsor: Oklahoma School Librarians

Date: Tuesday, April 25
Time: 11:00-12:30 pm
Location: Salon P

Session Description:
Have you ever wanted to get started offering computer programming to your customers but don't have a clue where to start? Try Scratch! Scratch is a great (and free!) tool for exciting folks of all ages about computer programming concepts without burying them in a wave of text. Scratch is a graphical programming environment which is complex enough to make wonderful video games and movies, but is simple enough for a five-year-old to get working. This session will not just outline teaching plans and ideas for participants using tools which have been battle-tested in the Library and community, but will also teach a short lesson to illustrate teaching ideas and just how easy and fun Scratch can be. If you want to participate with the lesson, please bring your own laptop.

Speaker:
Aaron PenceAaron Pence is the Manager of the Computer Training Center at the Norman Public Library, where he and his better-than-him staff teach computer classes, play with toys, help people apply for jobs and make resumes, build robots in the community, fix those dastardly smartphones, make wonderful movies and music, show kids how to play Minecraft, and generally do a lot of things you wouldn’t believe they get paid for. Aaron has spent his last fifteen years in Technical Services, in Circulation, in Adult Reference, in Academic Libraries, in Special Collections, and, best of all, in Public Libraries. Aaron loves helping people open new doors in their lives and the art of making the impossible, possible. He has also been known to stay up too late playing video games.
