Opening Doors and Improving Communications Between Managers and Staff

Full day workshop with sessions on team playing and consensus-building (Bierman); middle management, stuck in the middle with you (Engel); brown-nosing, sucking up and other stresses of middle management (Edmondson); panel session to answer questions submitted by workshop participants (Bierman, Piercy, Stringer); how to survive and improve evaluations (Dickson). Emphasis on improving relations between supervisors and support staff in all types of libraries. Dynamic speakers will share a broad range of experience and expertise. They represent support staff and management from all sizes and types of libraries. Learn how to open doors and improve communications in any library work situation.

Health Information Online

Sponsor: Public Libraries Division

A representative from the National Network of the Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region, will teach participants how to search for quality medical information. These hands-on classes will be held at the Norman Public Library computer training lab. "About Medline Plus" will be taught in the morning and "No Comprende? Spanish Health Information" will be covered in the afternoon. A boxed lunch will be served on the premises in nearby meeting rooms.

Serving the Mentally Ill

Sponsors: Interlibrary Cooperation Committee and Social Responsibilities Roundtable

This preconference will provide information about some of the common symptoms and behavioral patterns of schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, and other mental illnesses. Practical advice will be given on how to handle various situations and standards of behavior. Policies dealing with behavioral patterns will be discussed in the afternoon. A booklist will be available for collection development.

OLA Gold Revisited

This workshop is for and limited to those who were participants and mentors at the 2004 OLA GOLD Leadership Retreat. Barbara Clubb, 2005/2006 President Elect of the Canadian Library Association will be the guest speaker. The program will include a panel of library leaders: Barbara Clubb, Susan McVey, Jeanie Johnson, Marty Thompson, and Sharon Saulmon. In addition, OLA GOLD participants will have an opportunity to share with their mentors and fellow participants.

Kaney’s Kraft: Youth Services Library Programming

Join professional storyteller Peggy Kaney for tips and tricks on integrating puppets into your library programs. Through storytelling, Peggy will demonstrate the use of puppetry for an engaging story time session that you can take back to your library to implement in your programming schedule. Peggy's use of puppets can help you reinvent your library programs with lively language and drama. A hands-on make and take activity will be included in this workshop.

Fourth Annual Ruth Brown Memorial Golf Classic

Sponsor: Social Responsibilities Roundtable

The Ruth Brown Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at the Cobblestone Golf Course just a few miles away from the conference center in Norman.
This will be a nine-hole golf tournament with all proceeds going to the Ruth Brown Memorial Award. Tee off time is 1 pm. Registration is $50 in advance or the day of the tournament. For registration information contact: gteague@lunet.edu.

Join us after dinner at Norman's downtown landmark, the historic Sooner Theatre for a tribute to Donna Norvell and a celebration of her life. Then, enjoy a sneak peak at the 2005 Read Y'All poster and the OLA statewide awareness campaign and a great movie featuring Marian the Librarian. The program begins at 7:00pm and the movie will follow at 8:00pm. This event sponsored by the Friends of the Norman Library. Cash bar will be available. Transportation will be provided to and from the conference location to the Sooner Theatre.
