Learning Styles and Cognitive Strategies

Sponsor: Library Education Division

We know that people developed ways of learning information. To transfer or communicate information efficiently, we must be able to quickly assess client [student] learning preference and adjust our interaction so that they can access the information they want. We will briefly review the theories of learning and determine how to recognize these traits as clients present them. With observation and a few questions we can guide library users to the information at our 'fingertips'. This is an interactive session so come ready to participate.

Jane Bowerman is a life-long learner and 36 year veteran teacher. She travels internationally for the University of Oklahoma to teach military-associated grad students; and also teaches a freshman seminar and several junior-senior level courses on the Norman campus. Her focus is the way people learn, what they choose to learn, and what students find on the Internet and consider 'information'.

Speaker: Jane Bowerman, University of Oklahoma

eCopy: Using Digital Copy Machines for Scanning, Storing, Manipulating and Delivering Documents
Abstract: The Library recently acquired digital copy machines with new functionality made possible by the scanning technology built into these machines. Library staff has discovered a variety of uses with the ability to scan, store, manipulate and email documents using the copier, PC and networking technologies. With the ability to create multiple formats, connectivity to the Internet and compatibility with internal network structures, eCopy has optimized processes for several departments within the Library. Archiving, document delivery, sharing of documents and creation of educational materials are just a few of the uses that have been discovered. The eCopy system was designed to make use of computing and networking infrastructures, making use of security and other enterprise components, and integrates with applications like email, fax servers, and document management systems.
Presenter: Joy Summers-Ables, and Walee Chotikavanic, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center
