State Government Interactive Web Sites

Oklahoma state agency Web sites now offer a plethora of customizable information searches covering everything from GIS maps with aerial photographs of your own backyard to health statistics at the county level to offender lookup complete with photo. In this session Gary Phillips and Clif Broadworth of the Oklahoma Publications Clearinghouse will teach frequently used search pages and will provide a handout listing dozens more.

Just So You Know: Terrific Teen Titles

Sponsor: Oklahoma Association of School Library Media Specialists/Children And Teen Services

Participants will learn to use a variety of young adult fiction and nonfiction titles for both research and readers advisory. Ideas for promoting reading will also be presented based on current research (Loertscher, Krashen, Trelease) in the field of young adult reading habits in order to promote student achievement and pleasure reading. Also included will be an original, annotated bibliography of titles.

Clynell Hibbs is Library Media Specialist at Edmond Santa Fe High School in Edmond, OK. She is a National Board Certified Library Media Specialist.
Michelle Hasenfratz is Library Media Specialist at Sequoyah Middle School in Edmond, OK. She has served on numerous committees within OASLMS and is a National Board Certified Library Media Specialist.
Rosemary Moran is the former Young Adult Services Coordinator for Tulsa City-County Library. She has served on the Sequoyah Young Adult Book Award reading team, and has chaired the Sequoyah Administrative Team for OLA. She served two three year terms on ALA's Best Books for Young Adults Committee, and has also served on several ALA committees involving young adult services. She was a book reviewer for VOYA for nearly 10 years. Currently, she selects adult and young adult fiction in print, large print and audio versions for TCCL's Central Library and 24 branches.

Federated Searching in Use in the Library

Recruiting for Diversity

Arglenda Friday, a passionate advocate for diversity in the library profession, will suggest techniques for successful recruitment of a diverse library staff.

Educator, librarian, and humanitarian, Arglenda Friday is currently a lecturer in Library and Information Science while completing a doctorate in the field. Arglenda received Masters in Library Science from the University of Maryland. In addition to library service as a Diversity Coordinator, she has been a director of a Minority Business Development Center, and a technology consultant in Southeast Asia. Her involvement in diversity issues is also reflected in her volunteer service as a humanitarian and environmentalist-working with indigenous tribes in the jungles of the Amazon River Basin, and AIDS ravaged communities in Africa. Arglenda has received numerous academic fellowships, grants, and awards, along with civic commendations. She is also actively involved in the profession and has presented papers and research at a number of professional conferences, while publishing works in academic journals and books.

Washington Irving Crosses Oklahoma

Julia Brady Ratcliff provides a 21st Century description of the 1832 tour that Washington Irving and three of his friends took across the prairies. She recreates the time, the people, and the places using the results of travel and research, and quotes from all four tourists.

Julia Brady Ratliff is a retired Tulsa educator and the 1981 Tulsa Teacher of the Year. She Is a member of the Friends of Libraries in Oklahoma Board and the Friends of Tulsa City-County Libraries Board. She is serving on the Oklahoma Centennial Project.
