One Library’s Approach to Assessment
In the fall of 2003, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central
Association charged the library at Southeastern Oklahoma State University with
“developing processes or a process for establishing goals and assessing progress
that parallels the existing plan for student learning outcomes.” The end result
was a paradigm shift in how the library evaluated all aspects of its operation.
This presentation will show how the library integrated the ALA Standards for
Libraries in Higher Education and the ALA Information Literacy Competency
Standards for Higher Education into the overall assessment of the library. The
presentation will cover the step by step process which includes: writing a
Mission Statement, establishing goals, objectives and priorities that address
the Mission Statement, writing the appropriate instruments for evaluation and
the gathering of statistical data and how this data is used in the decision
making process.

How Do You Know What’s Missing? Find Out With
Collection Analysis
In an effort to provide a more comprehensive assessment of SOSU's library
holdings than could be accomplished by having library personnel compare the
collection against various printed collection guides, we opted for a
comprehensive analysis through OCLC WorldCat Collection Analysis service. This
service is making it possible for SOSU's library to analyze the age and subject
content of its own collections, compare its collections with those of peer
libraries, and compare, as a group, the level of overlap or uniqueness of our
collections. Collection Analysis is giving us sufficient information to propose
a comprehensive acquisitions policy that addresses the following areas:
providing adequate resources for new programs, maintaining adequate resources
for existing programs, meeting the needs of undergraduate and graduate students,
supplying accreditation and assessment documentation, demonstrating that
collections are aligned with institution missions, goals and collection
policies, and facilitating collection discussions with faculty and
administrators.

RefWorks Citation Manager: an Integrated Online Personal Database and
Bibliography Creator
The OSU Tulsa Library has adopted RefWorks as an online citation manager and
bibliography creator for the campus community. This paper will compare RefWorks
to other bibliographic management tools. Particular emphasis will be given to
user friendliness, accessibility, ease of use, and management of content and
setup. The presentation will also show how RefWorks merges easily with the
electronic resource base of journal databases and online catalogs. That makes it
a valuable addition to the online services the library provides to its
clientele. We will also discuss company policies and support, student concerns
(backups & loss of data), training needs for the reference staff, instructional
considerations for students and faculty, as well as marketing strategies to
promote the new software.
Speakers: Thomas Thorisch & Lynn Wallace, OSU, Tulsa
