Table Talk — MPLA Table Talk

Sponsor: Mountain Plains Library Association

MPLA President-elect Wayne Hanway and David Oberhelman, OLA's state representative to MPLA, will answer any and all questions about MPLA, especially the new structure with its exciting electronic communities, and will give tips on getting involved and getting the most out of the MPLA experience.

Wayne Hanway is Vice President/President-Elect of MPLA and was the OLA state representative on the MPLA Executive Board from 2003 to October 2005. An MPLA member since 1982, Wayne has found MPLA to be a warm and friendly community like OLA, just on a larger scale, and a great way to develop professionally and get to know other librarians. Wayne was President of OLA in 2001 - 2002 and has been Executive Director of the Southeastern Public Library System of Oklahoma since 1991.

Table Talk — The “King & King” Dilemma: Where to Shelve “Controversial” Children’s Books

Sponsor: Social Responsibilities Roundtable

The "King & King" dilemma refers to the problem of where to shelve "controversial" children's books. If we shelve them in the children's area, where they are most likely to reach the audience for which they are intended, are we risking the kind of reaction that occurred at the OKC Metropolitan Library System in 2005? What is our duty in reconciling our professional ethics with today's prevailing political climate?

Speaker: Will be facilitated by SRRT member Linda Jordan.

Of interest to public and school librarians; managers.
