Books on Trial: Red Scare in the Heartland

Wayne Wiegand will discuss his book, an account of the confiscation of the entire contents of an Oklahoma City bookstore in 1940 by county officials, who then put the proprietors on trial not for anything they did, but for the contents of the books they sold. Books on Trial has something to say to the present not only about the practice of book banning, but also about government treatment of its citizens' civil liberties.

Speaker: Wayne A. Wiegand, is F. William Summers Professor of Library and Information Studies and Professor of American Studies at Florida State University. He serves as Co-Editor of Library Quarterly and Director of the Florida Book Awards. In addition to over sixty scholarly articles, he is author of History of a Hoax: Edmund Lester Pearson, John Cotton Dana and "The Old Librarian's Almanack , Patrician in the Progressive Era: A Biography of George von Lengerke Meyer , An Active Instrument for Propaganda: American Public Libraries During World War I , and Irrepressible Reformer: A Biography of Melvil Dewey.

Weed Whacking in the Academic Library: Deselection for Academic Librarians
