Ardmore Public Library

Contributed by Lelia Milberg

1906

Library was organized. Carnegie funds were used for the building and
650 books were solicited for the shelves by women’s clubs. One time, a little later, in order to get more books, a soda fountain day was held. The library received a percentage of the day’s receipts at fountains manned by library friends, and sodas were drunk to such an extent that 17 new books could be bought. These started a rental shelf which provided funds for new books and supplies for the next fourteen years.
1936 The Carver Library Branch was organized. This was a WPA project.
1956 A bond issue was passed to build a new library.
1963 In July the new library building was completed and library staff moved in.
1964 The Ardmore Public Library received the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award –one of fifty similar awards throughout the nation.
