1903 |
The
Chautauqua Association of Blackwell collected a few books and
opened a library in a small room over the First National Bank.
Patrons paid $1.00 membership fees to check out books three
afternoons a week. |
| 1921 |
Voters
approved the “Blackwell Plan” on April 5th establishing
a public
library and providing for a two mill levy for library purposes
to be collected annually for ten years. Of this, 60% was retained
as a building fund. When this fund reached $20,000 the building
was to be erected, and the levy could be adjusted thereafter
by the Library Board. |
| 1923 |
Mrs. R.
M. Parkhurst succeeded the first librarian, Miss Sybil Neal.
One of
Mrs. Parkhurst’s contributions was a marionette theatre,
in which a series of performances was given each winter. |
| 1931 |
On October
21st the new library building was opened. It cost $35,000 with
its furniture, and it was entirely debt-free. |
| 1935 |
Circulation
reached 91,443 volumes or about 10 per capita. |
| 1936 |
An inventory
of the library showed 11,636 volumes on the shelves. |
