Blackwell Public Library

Contributed by Oklahoma Libraries 1900 – 1937.

1903

The Chautauqua Association of Blackwell collected a few books and
opened a library in a small room over the First National Bank. Patrons paid $1.00 membership fees to check out books three afternoons a week.
1921 Voters approved the “Blackwell Plan” on April 5th establishing a public
library and providing for a two mill levy for library purposes to be collected annually for ten years. Of this, 60% was retained as a building fund. When this fund reached $20,000 the building was to be erected, and the levy could be adjusted thereafter by the Library Board.
1923 Mrs. R. M. Parkhurst succeeded the first librarian, Miss Sybil Neal. One of
Mrs. Parkhurst’s contributions was a marionette theatre, in which a series of performances was given each winter.
1931 On October 21st the new library building was opened. It cost $35,000 with its furniture, and it was entirely debt-free.
1935 Circulation reached 91,443 volumes or about 10 per capita.
1936 An inventory of the library showed 11,636 volumes on the shelves.
