Crescent Community Library

1948

Library established by volunteer workers and with 800 volumes. The City
converted a WPA constructed rock building of 800 square feet designed for a bath house into a small community library.
1951 Volunteers staff library with 1,009 volumes.
1970 North bank building built. Library continues to be staffed with volunteers.
1980 Library in bath house. Employee paid by federal aid.
1985 Friends of Library incorporated. Over the years the Friends helped raise
money for the library through pancake breakfasts, book sales and bake
sales.
1986 Friends renovate bath house. Ramp built by Garden Club.
1990 Library open 15 hours per week. Library receives photocopier from ODL.
1992 Library receives fax machine from ODL for interlibrary loans. Volunteers
maintain grounds, books, and building. “Summer Safari” summer reading program offered.
1993 Reference grant received from ODL. Library now has 9,152 volumes and
is open 15 hours per week.
1994 Library receives an Americans with Disabilities grant and a computer from
ODL. Arbor Day is celebrated by first graders planting a tree. Library has 8,458 volumes and a circulation of 4,877.
1995 Arbor Day observed. Janice P. Gibson gives library $10,000. Along with
a $1,000 grant from the Chamber of Commerce, it is spent on materials and furnishings for the new library. Friends organize a book sale. The Farmers and Merchants Bank agreed to sell a large and attractive recently constructed brick building in the center of town to the City. Approved by the voters at the nominal price of $150,000, the building houses the city offices, police station and the library. ODL donated metal shelving and volunteers worked tirelessly to adapt the new building to house the library. Library now has two employees. Boy Scouts and volunteers help library move to new building.
1996 Library opened 40 hours per week with two employees. A long range plan
for the library is completed. 9,750 volumes owned by library.
1997 Library open 40 hours per week with 10,685 volumes. A children’s
librarian is hired. Adult programs and book reviews offered. Employees attend classes in the Institute in Public Librarianship.
1998 Library celebrates 50 years of service.
