Fairfax Public Library

1922

Library organized by the Delphian Society.
1923 First library board appointed.
1925 City Council recognized library service and made the first appropriation to
buy books.
1927 The library is organized under the Oklahoma Library Commission with
Mrs. Earl Fry appointed librarian.
1929 Mrs. Cora Lipe appointed librarian. Mrs. Lipe served as librarian for 23
years.
1953 Mrs. Warren C. Barnes appointed librarian.
1959 Mrs. Albert Philippe appointed librarian.
1961 In April celebrated National Library Week by beginning drive for funds to
build the new library. On August 29th construction of the building begins at
a cost of $20,000.
1962 On August 23rd the building is occupied. On November 11th the formal
opening of the 50 by 50-foot building is observed with an open house.
There were 15,000 volumes on the shelves in the new library when it opened.
1963 Purchased air conditioner for $50 which is still being used to cool the
library.
1979 Sandy Ellison told the librarian that we qualified for state aid.
1980 Library board started meeting four times a year. The first state aid money
was received and a special purpose grant was applied for.
1982 A $1,000 grant was received for the library.
