Hartshorne Public Library

1948

Hartshorne first opened its doors on July 26, 1948. Mr. and Mrs.
Elmer Thrower, the publishers of the “Hartshorne Sun” were credited with civic push behind getting it open.
1949 Hartshorne Public Library was organized by the Business and
Professional Women’s Club. The Library was compiled of donated materials and was manned by volunteers. Mrs. Jewell Surry was hired by the city as librarian in 1957. The library has been located in several downtown locations before it was moved to its current location in 1998.
1967 The Choctaw Nation Multi-County Library System (later changed to
Southeastern Public Library System of Oklahoma) comprised of 15 libraries in Haskell, Latimer, LeFlore and Pittsburg counties, was created by the Oklahoma Department of Libraries in the fall of 1967.
1969 Hartshorne/Haileyville Public Library underwent renovation and held an
open house on November 1, 1969. The 2 mil ad valorem tax levy passed in Pittsburg County on November 4, 1969.
1990 Photocopier and computer were purchased and library staff began
training on the computer.
1991 Fax machine was purchased with LSCA funds.
1992 Oklahoma Technology Network (OLTN) was implemented.
1993 Computer with CD drive was purchased with LSCA funds in September.
1995 Hartshorne Building Fund for the Future Committee was organized. Their
first project was the construction of a new library building.
1996 The City of Hartshorne donates $200,000 toward the new library building.
Hartshorne Building Fund for the Future Committee applied for and was
approved for a building grant from ODL.
1997 Hartshorne Building Fund for the Future Committee reached their goal of
over $400,000 for constructing a new building to house the library.
1997 Hartshorne Library is on the internet as of September 2, 1997. The City of
Hartshorne has a groundbreaking for the new Hartshorne Library on September 18, 1997.
1998 Hartshorne dedicates its new library on July 26, 1998, with the library
opening its doors on July 30th. An additional 2 mil ad valorem tax was passed on August 25th bringing support for the library to a total of 4 mils. A microfilm reader/printer was donated to the library in September, and the Governor visited the library on October 16th. The Hartshorne Library went online with SIRSI on September 6th. Librarians and patrons alike can search a database for all libraries in the system. New system library cards were issued.
