Inola Public Library

1967

Inola Extension Homemakers Club raised over $3,000 for library building
and collected over 3,000 books from donations. Club appointed library committee in May and consisted of Mrs. Win Ingersoll, chairwoman, Mrs. Bill Krause, treasurer, and Mrs. Henry Powers, Mrs. L. D. Littlefield, Jr. and Mrs. Clyde Stout. The building started in August on city property.
1968 Building was finished in April and the library was opened to the public.
1969 On June 25th Ordinance No. 68-3 creating a public library and reading
room for the Town of Inola was put into effect. It established a library board of directors and adopted by-laws and regulations. A library catalog filing system was set up. Volunteers and club members ran the library with no set regular hours.
1970 The library was staffed by part time workers with irregular hours until
1983. The one room building was allowed to deteriorate.
1983 Dorothy Turner was hired as library director. She established regular
hours and had the building cleaned and repaired.
1985 A building fund was started with public donations for the repair and
expansion of the library.
1989 The library received a $25,000 grant from the Founders of Doctors
Hospital to expand the library. No matching funds were required. Library
was expanded tripling the square footage of the building.
1992 Library received a fax machine.
1993 Library received its first computer for library use only.
1995 The Summer Reading Program becomes an annual event.
1996 Library computer was connected to the internet. Library staff began
attending library certification classes.
1998 Two computers are purchased, one for library use and one for public
internet access.
On April 30th Dorothy Turner, Anne Lawson and Sandra Getzfried
received certification from the State of Oklahoma as public librarians.
1999 A computer was purchased to use to automate the library, and library
staff worked to put the library’s records on the computer. The library
also received a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for
a new public access computer.
