The
Women’s Auxiliary of the Chamber of Commerce established
a small reading room with 500 volumes in the county court house.
Two years later the women persuaded the city to make an appropriation
for it. The first appropriation in 1922 was for $1,000. Since
then the city has supplied space and utilities to the library,
and all residents of Greer County have free library service. |

Library
built by W.P.A. workers to enhance “reading for all citizens
in Greer County”. On August 4th the library opened in
its new building which cost $40,000. The exterior is of native
stone and the interior is in keeping, with a rustic atmosphere
emphasized by the wainscoting and joists across the ceiling,
as well as by the furniture and shelving which were all made
by WPA labor. Above the fireplace symbolically hangs an ancient
ox yoke used by a pioneer family when they first settled in
Greer County. |
