Marlow Public Library

Contributed by Lois Bannister.

1930

Mrs. Ollie Barnet opened a reading rental shelf in her home in hopes it
would focus attention on the need for a city library.
1933 Nouveau and Coterie, women’s civic clubs, became sponsors of the rental
shelf and began fund raising projects to support it. The rental shelf was eventually moved to a downtown location.
1938 The proposed library became a WPA project. The objective was to get
600 donated books. 1200 were received. A bindery was set up and books were repaired and cataloged. Marlow now had a free library located at 311 West Apache.
1940 The City of Marlow agreed to accept the library as a part of the city and to
pay the librarian’s salary and upkeep of the library. The library was moved to a building at 109 North 5th and Mrs. W. A. Darnell served as librarian.
1945 The library moved above City Hall at 318 West Main. Mrs. Cad Cox
served as librarian.
1964 A drive was begun to raise funds to build a new building for the library
entirely with donations.
1970 Ground breaking was held at 407 West Seminole.
1972 The new building was dedicated and open to the public. Glovina Calhoun
was librarian.
1983 Billie Long became library director.
1993 Lois Bannister became library director.
1994 Library received ODL grant for OLTNcat computer and $3,000 grant for
large print books and adult audio books. Sigma Nu donated a computer for patron use.
1995 Automated with technology grant from ODL. The library added an IBM
typewriter for patron use and LED printer for patron computer from Johnson-O’Malley.
1997 Two internet access terminals were added for public use and one terminal
for staff.
