McLoud Public Library

Contributed by Sharon Smith and Donna Williams.

1976

Library services began with the bookmobile traveling throughout the
county.
1982 The bookmobile was permanently stationed next to the American Legion
building and offered McLoud residents 15 hours of service a week with one librarian and several volunteers.
1991 The grand opening of the McLoud Reading Center was held in January.
The Reading Center is a small store front donated by Shawnee businessman, Tom Flora, to be used as a “library”.
1992 On October 29th the McLoud Friends of the Library was established.
1993 On January 1st the Reading Center was officially designated the McLoud
Public Library.
1995 In January a $100,000 LSCA Title II matching grant was awarded to the
Town of McLoud for the building of a new library.
1996 On June 13th McLoud voters overwhelmingly approved a one cent sales
tax increase to help fund the library building project. That tax raised $75,000 for the library building. On September 21st ground breaking ceremonies were held at the site of the future McLoud Public Library. The 3200 sq.ft. building took six to eight months to complete.
1997 On May 3rd the old library on Main Street closed its doors. Dedication of
the new building was made by the Masonic Lodge #216 with the laying of a cornerstone. A time capsule was placed behind the stone to be opened in 100 years. Between May 5th and 11th, approximately 150 people comprised of sixth grade students and community volunteers form a human chain to move books from the old library into the new building at the corner of Main and Hinchly. On May 31st the grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony for the new McLoud Public Library was held.
