| 1976 |
Library
services began with the bookmobile traveling throughout the
county. |
| 1982 |
The bookmobile
was permanently stationed next to the American Legion
building and offered McLoud residents 15 hours of service a
week with one librarian and several volunteers. |
| 1991 |
The grand
opening of the McLoud Reading Center was held in January.
The Reading Center is a small store front donated by Shawnee
businessman, Tom Flora, to be used as a “library”. |
| 1992 |
On October
29th the McLoud Friends of the Library was established. |
| 1993 |
On January
1st the Reading Center was officially designated the McLoud
Public Library. |
| 1995 |
In January
a $100,000 LSCA Title II matching grant was awarded to the
Town of McLoud for the building of a new library. |
| 1996 |
On June
13th McLoud voters overwhelmingly approved a one cent sales
tax increase to help fund the library building project. That
tax raised $75,000 for the library building. On September 21st
ground breaking ceremonies were held at the site of the future
McLoud Public Library. The 3200 sq.ft. building took six to
eight months to complete. |
| 1997 |
On May
3rd the old library on Main Street closed its doors. Dedication
of
the new building was made by the Masonic Lodge #216 with the
laying of a cornerstone. A time capsule was placed behind the
stone to be opened in 100 years. Between May 5th and 11th, approximately
150 people comprised of sixth grade students and community volunteers
form a human chain to move books from the old library into the
new building at the corner of Main and Hinchly. On May 31st
the grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony for the new McLoud
Public Library was held. |
