Lean Means Green: Using Lean Process Improvement to Go Green and Save Money

Speaker: Marc Jensen, Director, University of Oklahoma Lean Institute

Summary: Dr. Jensen will provide insights into how participants can use lean process improvement tools to make their libraries more sustainable by reducing environmental waste.  Participants will learn to identify the full spectrum of environmental waste in their library processes and recognize the lean tools available to help them go green and save money by reducing or eliminating process waste.

Libraries Gone Green

Speaker: Theresa Tittle, Librarian Selector, Pioneer Library System and Aiden Street, Branch Manager of Southwest Oklahoma City Library

Summary: Green library advocate Theresa Tittle will provide an overview of green library opportunities from local and nation-wide library experiences. Aiden Street will provide a first hand account of implementing green practices in her library.

LEED On: Designing and Operating a LEED Library

Speakers: Todd Olberding, Director of Construction for the Metropolitan Library System; Rachel Kopchick, Manager of Northwest Library, Metropolitan Library System; Rondia Banks, Librarian at Northwest Library, Metropolitan Library System.

Summary: Director of Construction for the Metropolitan Library System, Todd Olberding, will give an overview of the planning and construction of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certified Northwest Library. He will discuss the challenges and victories during the LEED design process. Manager of Library Operations Rachel Kopchick and Librarian Rondia Banks will give tours of the Northwest Library highlighting everyday LEED influenced policies, practices, and services.

Summary: Three experts will discuss the challenges and successes they have had in implementing sustainability policies and practices in their institutions. The floor will be opened for discussion.
