REPORTS

  1. GODORT meeting at the 98th Annual OLA Conference

Barbara Miller, Legislative Committee officer. Barbara had no specific report, but addressed OSU’s continuing problem with GPO not doing their job in maintaining the “Browse Topics” website. Various GPO staff have made promises, but no one has delivered on them. “Browse Topics” is so deeply buried on GPO’s webpage that it is not easily found. To quote Barbara “They’re not keeping their promises to the depository community”.

  2. Gary Phillips reported that he has not been able to get paper copies of the state budget, which is only available at this time via Internet. All of the copies that have been printed have gone to legislators and their staff. Barbara said that OLA should write and pass a resolution that asks that the budget be printed and distributed to libraries.

OLD BUSINESS

  1. We discussed possibilities for a 2006/2007 Oklahoma Centennial workshop. We had no specific ideas but many general thoughts. Our target audience at this time is school librarians. In future meetings we will try to decide on: a. workshop subject(s); b. workshop date(s); and c. workshop location(s).
  2. We reached no conclusion about the possibility of deriving a workshop in conjunction with National History Day. It is a good opportunity, but we can’t figure out how to interact with our state’s school teachers and librarians to deliver it.
  3. We discussed possible workshops at next year’s annual conference. The two ideas that advanced were these: Gary Phillips and Clif Broadworth can deliver a workshop about using the OPC “Hotlinks”; and Steve Beleu and a guest speaker (who uses and teaches such data, and is a regular NCDC customer at ODL) could deliver a workshop about accessing and using current and historic climatic data for Oklahoma via the National Climatic Data Center and the Oklahoma Mesonet.

NEW BUSINESS

Steve Beleu talked about a new series of 3-hour workshops that ODL will present in 2006 that will teach Oklahoma’s librarians how to use the online tools that access current and historic legislation from the Oklahoma Legislature and current and historic legislation from the U.S. Congress. We will also teach librarians how to get the most out of the “Oklahoma Statutes” and “Oklahoma Sessions Laws” of which they have paper copies. There will be six workshops, one in the Oklahoma City area, four in the four quarters of our state, and one in the Panhandle. The Lead Officer will be Louisa Vodens, who works in ODL’s Cartwright Law Library, and will teach the Oklahoma half of the workshop; Beleu will teach the Federal half. These will be free workshops open to any librarian in Oklahoma from any type of library.

Meeting concluded: 9:25 a.m.
