OLA Conference Update

Lauren reported that this OLA Conference is going to be a very good one.  The program committee had more sessions submitted than in past years.  There is a full program.
The New Members Roundtable (NMRT) will be hosting a "Coat and Bag" check-in as a way to meet and greet people as well as drum up publicity for the roundtable.  The NMRT is in need of volunteers to work at the booth.  A person need not be a NMRT member to volunteer.
The GODORT program is arranged and is scheduled for Friday, March 28 from 2:15 to 4:30 with a brief business meeting at the end of the program.  The topic of the program is 'Collecting Local Government Documents.'
Steve Beleu will be hosting a session on DEQ's "Dataviewer" webpage on Friday, March 28 at 9:45 a.m.

Miscellaneous

The nominating committee has completed the slate of candidates for offices for the upcoming ballot.  Thank you Steve and Ursula.
Lauren will be updating the GODORT website as time allows.
Congratulations to Lauren Donaldson on becoming the Government Documents Librarian at UCO and to David Synder who was recently appointed Acting Director of the Lawton Public Library
Donations for the GODORT basket to be auctioned off Thursday night at the OLA Conference are being accepted.  Money raised through this auction goes to the scholarship fund.  Since there has been a great deal of concern lately with disappearing documents, the basket will have a magic and /or vanishing theme.  Contact Lauren if you want more information or would like to contribute.  Thanks to all of those who brought items today!

ALA Highlights

Barbara Miller gave a summary of GODORT activities at ALA Midwinter.  The new Government Printer, Bruce James, addresses the attendees.  While he comes from a business background, he intends to "bring GPO into the 21st century" and will take the next year to gather information and then will develop a long-term strategic plan for GPO.  He understands that GPO is not simply a printing business but instead has as it's primary function to gather and disseminate government publications.
The ALA pre-conference this summer focuses on digitizing government documents and then the regular GODORT programs focuses on 6 libraries that are considered to be national treasures.  The pre-conference for ALA Annual 2004 will focus on cataloging documents and the regular program may focus on municipal documents collection and management.
Lori Smith is authoring a book due out this fall called "Tapping the State Government Grapevine."

Discussion on future workshop

There was much discussion on GODORT hosting a workshop this fall regarding sites and sources of statutory laws.  This is in the preliminary planning stages and thoughts revolved around having an all type program with a morning session giving an overview and presenting the federal laws followed by an afternoon session presenting the state laws.  Potential speakers/presenters were suggested and Lauren will investigate more and report back at the business meeting at OLA in March.

Meeting adjourned 3:00

Respectfully submitted,
Tanya Finchum
