Information Matrix Camp: 2012 Camp --> Friday

Friday, July 20, Sixth Day of Matrix Camp

On Friday, the campers got the opportunity to tour the OSU campus.  The Architecture Library was obviously a library with stacks full of books and tables, but the content was strictly about architecture.  There were books about designing lobbies, books about ceilings, and books about architecture from other centuries, to name a few. We saw students’ work in the gallery, and then Prof. Steve O’Hara demonstrated a machine to measure stress on building materials.  The snap of a breaking beam startled us all.

We walked across campus to the Edmon Low Library for a tour of the facility, starting with a presentation about the Oral History project.  We learned, from a primary source, how to load a bull onto an elevator and about Sam the alligator in Theta Pond.  We walked to the Browsing Room and had the opportunity to take photos of different locations like the fountain and the tower.

After lunch we toured the Government Documents area.  While there, campers were able to witness OSU staff moving some of the collection to storage.  We saw old maps of Oklahoma.

The Library Archive staff showed some of their collection.  The sword was popular until we were told it was for pageants only, not a real weapon.  We walked to the Curriculum Materials Library where we saw children’s books and toys.  Those materials are for college students who plan to teach.  The pop-up dinosaur book was cool.

Our last stop before boarding the bus back to Midwest City was to the bookstore so campers could purchase OSU items.

Campers and counselors had dinner at the Golden Palace in Midwest City, then attended the play Sleeping Beauty on the Rose State College theater.  After an exciting week, campers went home on Saturday morning.
