The 2011 Information Matrix Camp, sponsored jointly by the Oklahoma Library Association and Rose State College, is under way!  26 campers from across the state joined together this afternoon in Midwest City to begin what looks to be a fantastic week of learning about the many kinds of libraries in the Oklahoma City metro region and surrounding cities and the communities they serve.

After checking out the hotel and checking into our rooms, we met in a reserved conference area for a quick briefing of what to expect this week and to familiarize us with the rules for the camp.

The facilitators (a great word for chaperones), Melissa Huffman, Marty Thompson, Sharon Saulmon, Catie Thompson, Leslie Langley and Christine Thompson, were introduced and then we loaded up on a very nice Kincaid bus, driven by Mr. Steve, and we headed to the Learning Resource Center at Rose State College where a delicious barbeque dinner awaited our arrival.

After dinner we met as a group in the library and Melissa introduced Cheryl Suttles, Oklahoma Library Association president, who told us about her job as a special librarian at Integris Health in Oklahoma City.

Then the facilitators talked about how they came to librarianship.  Melissa explained about the many and varied kinds of libraries there are, each requiring a different kind of librarian.  On a side table were 12 hats representing different library job, ones that, perhaps, campers had not considered, and they were encouraged to choose a hat and participate in the demonstration.  Emily wore the history librarian hat, Chynna the medical librarian hat and Brady the music librarian hat.  Regen chose the webmaster librarian hat, Candace the observatory librarian hat, Lydia the children’s librarian hat, Ashtin the zoo librarian hat, Reagan the audio visual librarian hat, Zane the map librarian hat, Rhys the bookmobile librarian hat and Gianna the law librarian hat.  It was in interesting conversation and some of the campers were intrigued to learn about the various jobs that librarians hold.

Finally, the chairs were pulled into a circle and a fun name game was played to help the kids learn each other’s names.  Each camper gave their names and the name of something they liked.  Let’s see if I can get it right:  Karsten likes macaroni, Raegan likes softball, Ryan likes sleeping, Rhys likes his hat and Ragan also likes Rhys’ hat, Chynna likes insane asylums, Valerie randomness, Brady likes Quantum Physics, Lydia likes swimming, Gianna likes hot Cheetos, Zane likes sports, Candace likes bright colored objects, Challis likes sports, Ashtin likes volleyball, Cheyenne likes animals, Daniel likes trees, Amina likes feathers, Maggie likes books, Kelsey likes playing the Sims, Emma likes music, Sarah likes texting, Emily likes musical chairs, Jessica likes shoes, Mary likes animals, Katelyn likes basketball and Noah likes Matrix Camp!  Whew!

So….the ice is broken and the kids are quickly getting to know each other.  They are excited (and we are too) about tomorrow’s plans so stay tuned for the next installment of MC 2011!
