Photo of Ken BiermanKen Bierman has spent nearly forty years automating libraries. Ken began his career in 1968 as the Data Processing Coordinator for the Oklahoma Department of Libraries when the MARC Distribution Service was started by the Library of Congress. He put Oklahoma on the national library automation map by quickly implementing an SDI subscription service based on the weekly tapes, becoming one of the pioneer applications of machine-readable cataloging records. He was asked to speak at several of the early MARC Institutes sponsored by ALA/ARL/LC, much to the amazement of librarians outside of Oklahoma! He then implemented an early turnkey library system, CLSI, at the Tucson Public Library followed by implementing NOTIS at Oklahoma State University. Between 1973 and 2000 he consulted with 35 public and 10 academic libraries, assisting them in implementing turnkey library systems and other library technology projects. Nearly ten of these libraries were in Oklahoma. Ken also became somewhat of an expert on unit cost studies in libraries assisting over 20 libraries in performing cost studies of various operations (interlibrary loan, acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, etc.). He served on the Oklahoma Library Technology Committee from 1990-91 and was active in the Oklahoma Library Association, serving as Chair of the Automation Roundtable and Treasurer of the Association. In 1995 he performed a major study of interlibrary loan in Oklahoma leading to significant service improvements. Since there were no more libraries to automate, Ken retired to Tucson in 2006.
