Photo of Gail MillerGail S. Miller’s interest in education and related activities came from a long line – great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, and three older sisters – who taught from one-room country schools to colleges in his native state of Nebraska. His career with the US Air Force and Civil Service brought him to Oklahoma in 1959 and to Altus in 1969 where he retired in 1989. His interest in libraries crystallized with his daughter’s graduation from OU in 1974 with a Masters in Library and Information Studies. Since that time, he has been an avid supporter of Oklahoma libraries. He supported the establishment of a multi-county library system to expand library services to southwestern Oklahoma, the building of a new library in his hometown, the development of an active Friends organization to support the library system, and was instrumental in developing adult literacy services in the region.

Miller was a delegate to the Oklahoma Governor’s Conference on libraries in 1978 where he was selected as one of seven Oklahoma delegates to attend the White House Conference on Libraries the following year. Again in 1990, he was a delegate to the Governor’s Conference on Libraries and Informational Services. At this conference, he was selected to be an Oklahoma delegate to the second White House conference in 1991. Miller is a charter member of FOLIO and completed four years as president. In 1995, he received an OLA Achievement Award for his contributions to libraries in Oklahoma. In 2002, he was awarded the OLA Special Meritorious Service Award. He was one of more than 300 honorees named to the first-ever National Advocacy Honor Roll sponsored by the American Library Association to recognize those who have actively supported and strengthened library services at the local, state or national levels over the last 100 years. He is currently co-chair of FOLIO’s Seed Grants committee that helps new library Friends to organize. He is the father of Kathy Hale, the Director of the Southern Prairie Library System, and Jeanine Berrong who lives in Weatherford.
