OLA 2015: BibFrame the Future of Cataloging?

Catalogers live in interesting times: we are moving from AACR2 to RDA and from MARC … to what?  This session will explore BibFrame, the proposed replacement for MARC 21.  Topics will include: A little (metadata history); two views of library metadata; why MARC must die; the Web and the need for a new bibliographic framework; understanding the semantic web; BibFrame: what it is and its relationship to RDA; current status of BibFrame.

Bill WalkerBill Walker currently serves as the Metadata and Imaging Specialist at Amigos Library Services in Dallas, Texas, where he has worked for nearly 19 years.  He teaches workshops on cataloging, metadata and subjects related to digitizing photos, texts and audio recordings and does consulting in these areas.  From 1988 to 1996 Bill cataloged music at Southern Methodist University.  He holds bachelor's degrees in music education and classical guitar from the University of New Mexico and master's degrees in Music Theory and Library Science from the University of North Texas.
