Muskogee Public Library Genealogist, Nancy Calhoun, will offer quick steps for librarians to use when assisting patrons ready to build their family tree.  A Family Tree Chart for a popular Oklahoma Librarian will be revealed during the program.

Nancy CalhounNancy Calhoun is head of the genealogy department at Muskogee Public Library where she has worked for almost eight years.

Her work experience includes publishing, 20 years in newspaper work, teaching, photography, public and university libraries. Her education includes a M.S. in curriculum and instruction and undergraduate degrees, a B.A. in English and history, and a B.S. in vocational home economics with a minor in photography.

Her genealogy quest began with stories told by her paternal grandfather who came to Oklahoma from Virginia. Other research paths lead to Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Kentucky. Her research adventure began when she took a genealogy class at Washburn University in the early 1970’s while a Teacher Corps Intern in Kansas. She has been expanding her education in genealogy at every opportunity since that time, including local, state and national events. She has attended 11 national conferences, sponsored by either FGS or NGS.

She was a recipient of the librarian’s scholarship to attend the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research at Samford University. Her writing entries have received awards in five contests held by the International Society of Family History Writers and Editors.

She frequently speaks on Oklahoma and Native American research at libraries and for societies.
