OLA 2015: Managing Up the Generations
Share |

Date: Thursday, April 30
Time: 11:00 am – noon
Sponsor: Supervisors, Managers, Administrators Roundtable (SMART)

Almost every seminar on management or supervision will discuss managing across generations, but most of them assume that the manager is working with younger employees. This session will look at the other side of the issue: How the growing number of Millennials and Gen-Xers in management can work with employees who are older than they are. The session will look at the following questions: --What are the realities and stereotypes of each generation in the workplace? *What challenges are faced by managers who are younger than their employees, and vice versa? *How can Xer and Millennial managers best supervise employees who are older than they are?  *How can middle- and upper-managers help their Millennial managers succeed? *How can older employees work best with younger managers?

Rebekah LynamRebekah Lynam is the branch manager of the Norman West Public Library. Before her current position, she worked as the shelver supervisor at the Southwest Oklahoma City Library, a circulation clerk at the Norman Public Library, and a library assistant at the Prague Public Library. In these positions, she has supervised employees from age 16 through – well, it’s not polite to ask. Rebekah has a master’s degree in journalism and mass communication from the University of Oklahoma, where her research focused on public relations and terrorism communication (separately).
