OLA 2015: Lunch and Learn: Tenure and Faculty Status for Librarians: Pros and Cons

Kristen Burkholder (Oklahoma City University), Karen Harmon (Connors State College), and Michele Seikel (Oklahoma State University) will discuss the pros and cons of faculty vs. non-faculty status and tenure for academic librarians. Their discussions will include the requirements of their respective schools. This will be an informal session.  There will be time for you to ask questions of each of the speakers.

Krsiten BurkholderKristen Burkholder has been the Access Services Librarian at Oklahoma City University since 2012.  She previously taught medieval European history for seven years at Oklahoma State University. Her professional interests include intellectual freedom, open access, and library instruction. Despite appearances, she is neither a trained copier/printer repair person nor a computer whiz.

Karen Harmon, Librarian, Connors State College/Muskogee West Library
Karen Harmon Following graduation with her MLIS from the University of Oklahoma, May, 2013, Karen Harmon has been the head of the Connors State College Muskogee West Campus/Northeastern State University Library (CSC/NSUM). She is responsible for all aspects of the library in regards to Connors State College (CSC). She is involved with CSC organizations such as the Global Education Committee and the Student Success and Retention Committee. Karen serves as secretary for both the CSC Assessment of Student Learning and the Efficiency and Modernization Strategic Planning Committees. Karen is co-chairperson of the CSC Library/Learning Resource Center Committee. She is also actively involved with the Oklahoma Council of Academic Library Directors and currently serves as the OK-Share liaison. Karen enjoyed serving the Oklahoma Library Association on the Local Arrangements Committee for the 2014 OLA Conference. She is also serving on the University and College Division Committee of OLA. Her research interests lie in the correlation between student library use and the colleges’ retention, especially in a Community College setting.

Michele Seikel is a tenured professor on the library faculty at Oklahoma State University.  She has held paraprofessional positions at Norman Public Library, University of Oklahoma, and Stanford University, and served as a professional librarian at Oklahoma Panhandle State University and at Oklahoma State University.  Michele’s primary professional focus is in cataloging, and she has published several research papers in technical services journals. In ALA, she has co-chaired the Cataloging Norms Interest Group and the Cataloging and Metadata Management Section’s Policy and Planning Committee. Currently, she is serving on the ALCTS Planning Committee, and is a member of the editorial board of the ALCTS Papers Series and the journal Library Resources and Technical Services.
