Leading the Way One Step at a Time: How School Librarians Can Lead a Learning Revolution!

Session Description

Come learn and discuss strategies that support moving the school library/learning commons to the center of teaching and learning. Steps you can take now!

Session Objective

Participants will be able to:

  • Analyze and identify needs in current practice .
  • Learn about and brainstorm strategies to address needs.
  • Develop a plan to begin a learning revolution through considerations of spaces, virtual presence, advocacy, co-teaching, and inquiry.

Kathryn Lewis

Kathryn Lewis, Norman Public Schools Director of Media Services and Instructional Technology, has been in education since 1977, working in Norman since 1982. Kathryn has been a classroom teacher at elementary and high schools in Georgia and Oklahoma. She has served as school librarian at all levels, elementary through high school. Kathryn holds a Masters in Library and Information Studies from the University of Oklahoma. She currently serves as a member of the AASL Guidelines and Standards Editorial Board. Kathryn is the Region 6 Representative to the AASL Board of Directors and Past Chair of the AASL Supervisors Section. Kathryn has served as a consultant on an IMLS funded grant involving a STEM maker space in a Norman Public Schools middle school library. She is also participating as one of 25 nationwide school library supervisors as part of the University of Maryland's Lilead Fellowship program. She is a member of the Oklahoma Library Association (of which she is a past president), Oklahoma School Librarians, ALA, and AASL She has served on numerous AASL and OLA task forces and committees. Kathryn has co-authored a book and written several articles. She is the co-author of the AASL/Achieve document "Implementing the Common Core Standards: The Role of The School Librarian Action Brief". Kathryn received the 2013 University of Oklahoma SLIS Outstanding Alumni Award, the Oklahoma 2012 Outstanding Technology Leader award, and the 2010 Oklahoma Library Association Library Legend Award.

Dr. Buffy Edwards

Dr. Buffy Edwards is the Library Information Specialist for the District and the Teacher Librarian at Dimensions Academy Alternative Education School.  As a Teacher Librarian, Buffy has 28 years experience with 25 of those years being with the Norman Public Schools. 

Awards and recognition Dr. Edwards has received include Site Teacher of the Year (2 districts) and Norman Public School District Finalist for Teacher of the Year, Oklahoma's Polly Clarke Award for exemplary school librarianship, AASL's Information Technology Pathfinder Award, Progressive School Library Media Award for exemplar integration and leadership for technology integration, Oklahoma Education Association's Instructional Excellence in Education Award - Teachers Teaching Teachers for outstanding leadership working with teachers and National Board Certification 2002 - 2012.

As a professional, Buffy has been a leader in the district and in state and national organizations holding a variety of offices including Chair of Oklahoma School Librarians, Affiliate Delegate to the American Association of Schools Librarians, and a member of the Oklahoma Library Associations' Marketing Committee.  Buffy is an active presenter at local, state, and national conferences and is an adjunct professor at the School of Library and Information Studies, University of Oklahoma. Dr. Edwards has work published in national library magazines and has been a part of the National Board Library Media Standards Review and Revision process as well as Assessment Center exercise item review committee.  She has received numerous Norman Public School Foundation Grants as well as a $5,000.00 Laura Bush Foundation Grant.
