WHEREAS, libraries play an important role in the economic development of communities by providing critical services; and

WHEREAS, our forefathers understood the need for access to information for those who aim to govern themselves as evidenced in this quotation by James Madison: “A popular Government without popular information or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy or perhaps both”; and

WHEREAS, libraries level the playing field for all people by providing free information without judgment; and

WHEREAS, Oklahoma librarians are dedicated to their profession and to the informational needs, privacy and dignity of the citizens we serve; and

WHEREAS, librarians in Oklahoma are part of a chain of education from infancy to school to college to adult lifelong learning; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED that the Oklahoma Library Association celebrates all libraries as the heart of our many, varied communities in the great state of Oklahoma.

Resolution – Dewey Dance?

WHEREAS, the Oklahoma Library Association’s Endowment Committee posed the question to the OLA Program Committee, “Dewey Dance?”; and

WHEREAS, Oklahoma librarians can . . . apparently . . . really boogie; and

WHEREAS, the 2011 All-Conference E vent shined a spotlight on this overlooked talent of the state’s library and information professionals; and

WHEREAS, the OLA Local Arrangements Committee—inspired by Lynn Wallace and led by Rita Howell and Buddy Ingalls—embraced this show and thrilled attendees with an exciting and motivating Flash Mob; and,

WHEREAS, the competitive teams:
  • The Dewey Dance Evolution from Norman Public Schools;
  • The Department of Libraries’ Let’s Do the Twist;
  • The SEPLS Dewey Divas;
  • The ERLS Overdue Dance Crew; and
  • The Noble Foundation’s Lenny and the Library Ladies
performed with such dedication and enthusiasm that attendees left the event with near-permanent smiles; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED that when Oklahoma Librarians are asked, “Dewey Dance?”, they shall always answer affirmatively in the words of the great Billie Letts: “Hell, yes!”

WHEREAS, Kay’s tireless efforts have made OLA a stronger, more vibrant, and caring organization; and

WHEREAS, Kay has been a role model to us all in her willingness to go the extra mile in all her endeavors; and

WHEREAS, her positive attitude, the kindness she shows to all OLA members, her commitment to diversity, her advocacy on issues affecting us all, and her belief in libraries and the power of information is truly infectious; now, therefore be it
