Oklahoma Library Association
University and College Division
Annual Report
July, 2000 - April, 2001
Officers for 2000-2001: Rhonda Taylor Harris, Secretary; Ann
Blakely, Chair Elect; Retha Robertson, Chair.
A very big thank-you to a small group of very hard working
and enthusiastic members of the University and College Division
(UCD) who met regularly to plan and carry out the activities for
this year.
For the OLA conference two programs and poster and paper
presentations were planned. Buried Treasures: Special
Collections in Oklahoma, Part II program planning was chaired by
Barbara Bradley with assistance from Pat McCall. The program
continues last year's program theme of highlighting special
collections in Oklahoma. This year the Oklahoma City Zoo, Melvin
B. Tolsen Black Heritage Center, Oklahoma Historical Society and
the Philbrook Museum of Art are the featured collections.
Reference Roundtable co-sponsored this program.
The topic that was selected for the second conference program
was Tell It Like It Really Is: Statistics for the New
Millennium. Gathering and using statistics in the
digital/electronic age and how all types of libraries can more
realistically report activity and usage. Ann Blakely made all
the arrangements for this program.
Cecelia Brown, David Oberhelman, and Julia Crawford prepared
the guidelines and application forms for the poster sessions and
for the paper presentation programs. All forms were made
available in paper and online through the OLA web page. We
received a high number of responses with very interesting topics
for the OLA conference in Oklahoma City.
After much discussion on possible topics for a workshop, the
decision was made to develop a program addressing distance
learners and how librarians and libraries can assist them.
Workshop will highlight distance-learning programs available in
Oklahoma; review of what some academic, public and school
libraries are doing to assist these students. Other sessions
will focus on building library networks, creating friendly web
sites for distance learners, free web resources available, and
how to promote library services to faculty and students. Title
of the workshop to be offered May 15 is Are You Being Served?
Distance Learners and Their Local Library. Carolyn Warmann and
her committee of Jon Woltz, Pat McCall, Charles Brooks, and
David Oberhelman worked tirelessly to plan this workshop.
Library Education Division is cosponsoring this workshop and
some of their members also worked with UCD planning this one-day
program.
Salary Survey Committee composed of Barbara Bradley and Pat
McCall continued the Division's ongoing responsibility to survey
Oklahoma academic libraries to determine the starting salary for
beginning professional librarians. Survey was conducted by email
and the results were tabulated and submitted to OLA Executive
Director who then reported this to ALA.
Nominating Committee members Ann Blakely, Pat McCall and
Barbara Bradley presented a full slate of candidates for
vice-chair/chair-elect and secretary. Ballots will not be
counted until after this report is due so next year's officers
will have to be announced at a later date.
Electronic Committee members Charles Brooks, Jon Woltz, and
David Scott continue to explore locating a new host for the
website and redesigning the UCD pages. The OLA web pages and the
UCD listserv remain the primary means of communication for
division members.
