Annual Report
2004 - 2005

Academic librarians working in many colleges and universities from far-flung areas of the state joined together to produce a productive and interesting year. University and College Division leaders this year were C. Evlyn Schmidt, Chair; Cathy Blackman, chair-elect; Michele Seikel, secretary; and David Oberhelman, past chair. The active member mix included experienced UCD members, new and returning members.

UCD sponsored workshops and programs included the following:

  • "ILL Doesn't Mean You're Sick" workshop, January 28, Rose State. Chaired by David Oberhelman, with participants from all types of libraries, and knowledgeable, interesting presenters made for a good tumout in spite of the unexpected snowstorm. Co-sponsored by Technical Services Round Table and Interlibrary Cooperation Committee. UCD volunteers were Melissa Huffman, Jo Daniels, Susan Jeffries, Michele Seikel, Elaina Stewart, and David O.
  • OLA Annual Conference programs:
    1. "Opening Doors and Improving Communications Between Managers and Staff' pre-conference, March 30. Keynote speaker Ken Bierman, Debra Engel, Linda Edmondson, Earlene Piercy. Susan Stringer, and Theresa Dickson shared experience and expertise. Co-sponsored by Support Staff Round Table and SMART Round Table.
    2. "Buried Treasures" spotlighted Rodeo Collection, Western History Museum; Historical Medical Instruments, OU Health Sciences Center; and Mabee-Gerrer Museum, St. Gregory's University.
    3. "Computer Security for the NON Technical" provided practical, low-level solutions to computer problems.
    4. Contributed Paper Session I: RFID, E Copy -digital copy machines, II: Assessing Student Learning Outcomes, and Incorporating Library Instruction into the Curriculum.
    5. UCD Poster Session I: RFID, Cameron and OSU-Okmulgee; Tech Buffet; Once and Future Library; Sharing Your Library's History; II: Leadership, Ghost Ranch and OLA Gold; Ruth Brown; OKDIGITAL; Mexico in U.S. Government Documents.

Members contributed fun items for two baskets, Star Wars and Fit for a King (medieval theme), for OASLMS scholarship silent auction.

Thanks to Mary Evans, University of Tulsa, who conducted the annual electronic salary survey. Kudos also to Charles Brooks, University of Tulsa, who continues to serve as the UCD webmaster. I appreciate all of the members who have attended meetings, shared ideas, made suggestions, and supported this busy agenda. Special thanks to David Oberhelman who did yeoman work all year coordinating the ILL workshop, UCD Poster Sessions, Contributed Paper Sessions, and answering many questions.

The UCD listserv provided valuable communication to all members. Electronic voting selected the pre-conference title. Seven face-to-face meetings were held in Tulsa, Stillwater, and Midwest City

Plans for next year include a winter workshop. Topics under consideration are Knowledge Management, partnering with OK Special Library Association on how to get published, and partnering with OLA Legislative Committee on lobbying and PACs. UCD will determine OLA conference program ideas for 2006. UCD also hopes to be a part of the suggested Interlibrary Loan statewide group. 2005-2006 will continue the UCD commitment to professional development and cooperation with OLA divisions and round tables to provide relevant and interesting programming.
