Minutes – August 21, 2001 |
Stillwater Public Library
In attendance: Kay Boies (OLA), Ann Blakely (TU,
Chair), Cathy Blackman (Cameron), Barbara Bradley (OSU),
Melissa Huffman (Rose State), David Oberhelman (OSU)
I. Call to Order / Minutes of July 10th meeting
Ann called the meeting to order and minutes of the July 10th
meeting were read and approved.
II. Committee Reports
A. Salary Survey
Cathy reported that she had received 23 responses to salary
survey request to date. Some respondents reported
salaries based on a 9-month appointment instead of a 12-month
appointment; in such cases the committee decided to adjust the
salaries to a 12 month cycle. Most included the starting
salary, but some had given a range. A question about
faculty status for librarians was included in this year’s
survey, and 4 responses to that question were returned.
Out of the 4, only Cameron, OSU, and OU indicated that
librarians held faculty status at their institutions. A
few libraries sent in copies of their handbooks for retention
and promotion; others will be requested and a September 14
deadline was set for libraries to submit their handbooks.
The group then discussed several situations in which the
survey helped establish baseline salaries for Oklahoma
librarians and the importance of keeping such measurements
over time.
B. Nominating Committee
Melissa requested an email list of member of UCD to facilitate
the call for nominations for the positions of Vice Chair/Chair
Elect and Secretary. Kay will send updated lists of the
membership to both Ann and Melissa. After some
discussion, Melissa requested the members to email her names
or suggestions for potential candidates. December 1 is
the deadline for names to be submitted for the ballot.
C. Posters and Presentations Committee
David reported that the web submission form had been set up at
http://www.library.okstate.edu/forms/ucdcall4presentations.htm
and that the call for presentations flier had been given to
Kay to go out in the next OLA bulk mailing. The
deadline for poster or paper presentation submissions is
November 16. 3 poster sessions will be scheduled during
no-conflict times and 4 hour-long presentation sessions (2
back-to-back) have been requested. Barbara and Tom
Messner of Northeastern OSU-Broken Arrow are also on the
committee. The committee will assign timeslots to
presenters in December and submit them to Kay for the
preliminary Conference program.
D. Workshop Planning
Ann discussed possible topics for a workshop to be held in the
spring (March or May depending on the timing of PLA).
One topic could be copyright in the electronic environment and
as it affects ILL. Georgia Harper of the University of
Texas at Austin was suggested as a possible speaker on the
topic. Laura Gassaway of the University of North
Carolina, Chapel Hill was another speaker we discussed.
Ann said she would check into their availability and fees they
would charge and report back to the group when she had more
information.
E. Pre-conference Program on Hiring/Staffing
Ann proposed either a workshop or program on the crisis in
finding qualified applicants for vacancies in academic as well
as all libraries. One possible speaker would be Pat
Wagner of Colorado who is already doing another pre-conference
session for OCAULD. Ann said she would contact her to
see if she would be interested in speaking on the topic and
then UCD would propose a panel discussion or a table talk with
Oklahoma library administrators to explore the issues in this
state. Ann will approach the Administration Roundtable
to see if they would be interested in co-sponsoring these
sessions. UCD will plan to include more programming on
the future of the profession in subsequent years.
F. Buried Treasures Program
Barbara and Pat McCall are on the committee for organizing
this conference program. The group discussed possible
library collections to highlight in the Tulsa or Eastern
Oklahoma region. Some of the institutions mentioned
included the Schustermann Genealogical Center, the special
business or Spanish collections at the Tulsa City-County
Library, the University of Tulsa Special Collections, the Will
Rogers Center, and the Pawnee Bill Museum collection.
Barbara will contact various libraries to gather a list of
speakers to bring to the group.
G. Distance Education Directory
Carolyn Warmann proposed developing a directory of distance
learning contact persons at the various Oklahoma colleges and
universities to distribute to other librarians. Plans
for this directory will be fleshed out later and a committee
might be formed with input from Barbara Frame (State
Department of Education and LED member) to address some of the
library education programs in the states as well.
H. “Celebrating the Web” Mini-Conference
Melissa reported on the first planning meeting for the
mini-conference on the web to be held July 30-31 (tentatively)
at Rose State College. The event would last 1 ½ days
and would be co-sponsored by LED, UCD, PLD, TESRT, and Ethics.
Various tracks for breakout sessions were outlined and a
division would develop programs in one of those tracks.
The tracks include technology, training, electronic
collections, ethical issues/privacy issues, website
development, and a “how to do it” hands-on track.
UCD agreed to handle the e-collections track with programming
on topics such as netLibrary, Questia, etc. The
registration fees for the conference were tentatively set at
$75 for the whole conference, $55 for the full day, and $45
for the half day. The planning committee for the
mini-conference will meet at 11am at the same location/time as
the UCD meetings.
III. Next meeting
The next UCD meeting will be Tuesday, September 18 at the
Guthrie Public Library. The meeting was then adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
David Oberhelman, Secretary
