The November 1998 and January 1999 minutes were approved.
Old Business
Committee Reports
- Workshop Committee
- Sheila Grant-Johnson discussed the scheduled workshop, Taking
Control of the Internet: Tools for managing and accessing
the Internet, at OU
Health Sciences Center Bird Library Auditorium on April
27, 1999. The workshop was approved at the January OLA
Executive Board meeting. UCD members present commended the
committee on the excellent workshop plans.
- Conference Committee
- Tom Biggs gave the report for the conference committee
starting with the Really hands-on Web Page Design
scheduled for Wednesday, March 24, 1999. In this workshop,
participants will create their own web page using web page
creation software. The presenters for this workshop are Andy
Peters, Jon Woltz, Anna Moore and John Rosenhamer.
Library Support for Distance Learners is another
pre-conference and it is co-sponsored by the University and
College Division and the OCALD (Oklahoma Council of Academic
Library Directors). This pre-conference is also scheduled
for March 24, 1999. Dr. Richard Madaus, Director, College
Center for Library Automation and Chair, Steering Committee
for Distance Learning of the Florida Distance Learning
Library Initiative will be the presentor and the program
will include a reactor panel of university administrators
and public and university librarians. This workshop is a
repeat of the ACRL workshop held last November.
Effective Bibliographic Instruction - Traditional or
New is a poster session jointly co-sponsored by the
Library Education Division and UCD scheduled for March 25,
1999. Several contributed paper presentations also sponsored
by the UCD will also be presented on March 25. They include Two
Reference Librarians' Experience Writing a Reference Work,
The Role of the Reference Librarian In the Electronic
Information Environment and Researching, Rethinking
and Rebooting: Designing Library Instruction for English.
The contributed paper presentations sponsored by UCD and
scheduled for Friday, March 25, are Information Seeking
Behavior of Scientists at the University of Oklahoma, Shelving
and Shelf Reading, Web Based Training for Library
Instruction: Library Research Survival Guide for Biological
Sciences 1114, American Indian Women Stereotypes in
Children's Literature, The Digital Atlas of Oklahoma:
A Vast Amount of Cartographic Data and A Digital
Challenge: Bringing Kappler's Indian Affairs: Laws and
Treaties to the World Wide Web. A total of nine
presentations and seven posters sessions are scheduled for
the conference. Peggy Cook and her committee are to be
commended for such a fine job.
Dr. Bob Swisher, professor at SLIS, the University of
Oklahoma, will be presenting Librarians, Libraries and
Librarianship in the 21st Century on March 25 (also
sponsored by UCD).
- Electronic Services Communication Committee
- Tom Biggs gave the report for the Electronic
Communications Resources Committee. The listserv membership
figure for UCD is down from fifty-four to forty. We need to
drum up some interest in the listserv perhaps by having
local job listings on listserv. We have a lot of links and
information on our Web page and if you have anything you
think needs to be deleted or added please contact Charles
Brooks at TU. One idea was for the division to come up
with a draft message that would encourage UCD members to
join the listserv by e-mail.
- Interactive Video
- Will try another interactive video meeting in June
probably.
- Other Old Business
- Barbara Bradley recommended placing the information from
the salary survey on the Web page. The response from the
salary survey was 50% returned responses.
Nominating committee ballots have been sent out and are
due by February 16.
New Business
- Mentoring Program
- Tom Biggs mentioned that the executive board showed an
interest in the mentoring program. As soon as students
graduate from the OU School of Library and Information
Studies we might try to pair them with a mentor. New
librarians in the state with up to 3 years experience could
buddy up with new graduates at conference. The mentoring
system helps both the new librarians and it is also a good
way to increase OLA membership. New librarians have no
better place to network than through OLA and the UCD. A
bibliography of mentoring was sent around the table. If
there is an interest for mentoring maybe this could be
formalized in the near future. This could also be used as a
recruiting tool for academic libraries. Tom would like to
begin a discussion on this and maybe even start a committee
in April.
- Membership Drive
- Encourage fellow library staff to join OLA and the UCD
division. Only a $1 investment to joint the UCD division.
Please also encourage institutional membership as well.
- Other New Business
- Suggest that the division maybe meet over the summer to
discuss workshops for next year and also perhaps have
workshops in the fall as well as the spring.
- Next Meeting
- April 6, 1999 at 1:00 at Robert
M. Bird Health Sciences Library, University of Oklahoma
Health Sciences Center.
Respectfully submitted,
