In Attendance : Cathy Blackman, Cameron (Secretary); Ann Blakely,
TU; Barbara Bradley, OSU; Helen Clements, OSU; Mary Evans, TU; Melissa
Huffman, Rose State (Chair); David Oberhelman, OSU (Vice Chair); Carolyn
Warmann, OSU

The meeting was called to order by Melissa at 1:30 pm. Each attendee stated their name and school.

I. Committees

A. Salary Survey - Mary agreed to conduct the survey for the upcoming year. Cathy will send last year's survey information to Mary. Ann brought up the problem that occurred last year regarding how to calculate 12 month vs. 9 month appointments. Mary can further explore options on how to deal with this discrepancy. Melissa introduced the idea of asking about staff/paraprofessional/library tech salaries on the next survey. The wording for the types of positions needs to be worked out. One possibility is : no degree required, bachelor's required, bachelor's degree plus further education (not MLIS). Melissa will work with Sharon Saulmon on the terminology. Instead of asking for the average beginning salary, the survey will ask for a range of beginning salaries.

B. Nominating committee - David and Helen agreed to serve. Other UCD members will be asked, via e-mail, if they will serve.

C. Poster/Papers for Conference - Barbara will chair the committee this year. David agreed to help again this year. Tom Messner will be contacted about serving. The deadline for submitting ideas to the committee to be included in the next OLA conference is November 26.

II. Web Mini-Conference Update

As of July 16, 58 had registered for the conference. Melissa encouraged each person present to attend.

III. Meeting Schedules

Meetings will be held the third Tuesday of each month at 1:30 pm. Meetings will be in the following locations : August 20 at Stroud Public Library; September 17 at Rose State; October 15 at University of Tulsa; November 19 at Norman Public Library; December 17 at Guthrie Public Library; and January 21 in the OLA chat room. Carolyn suggested that we try including people who could not drive to the meetings by communicating with them during the meetings via the OLA chat room.

IV. Conference Programs

A. Buried Treasures - This session is popular at conference so we will do another one next year. Some places that could be contacted are : the Natural History Museum in Norman, various OU special collections, and the terrorism institute. Carolyn agreed to contact speakers if no other UCD member volunteered for the task.

B. Other Ideas - UCD will approach OCALD with the idea of co-sponsoring a pre-conference program about the interior design and spaces of libraries. Possible topics are seating arrangements, signage, colors, and lighting. Possible speakers are Carolyn's sister, someone from the School of Architecture at OU, and the library design specialists that spoke briefly at the last OCALD pre-conference program.

Helping academic librarians relate to the teaching faculty at their school is another possible conference session topic. The "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" software that was used at the May workshop was a big hit, and we will incorporate this technology into the session. UCD members are encouraged to draft questionsthat could be asked during the panel discussion on the topic.

V. Workshop Ideas

Copyright is still a hot topic. Carolyn suggested that we plan to do the workshop in the Fall of 2003 to allow for more planning time and to spread workshops out throughout the year. Possible speakers are Laura Gassaway, someone from the Oklahoma Attorney General's Office, or the man from Indiana (Carolyn will check on the name). Carolyn suggested that the workshop be held one day in Tulsa and the following/previous day in Oklahoma City.

A modified version of the recruitment and retention workshop may be held in Norman. The new emphasis would be "Preparing Yourself to be Hired". Library school students would be encouraged to attend.

VI. Other Business and Announcements

Melissa suggested that by-laws be updated to state that the division does the salary survey each year.

VII. Adjournment was at 3:00 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,
Cathy Blackman
