David Oberhelman called the meeting to order at 1:25 p.m.
I. Introductions and Salutations
David encouraged all members present to remind their
colleagues to renew the OLA/ UCD membership
II. Business Items:
A. OLA Conference Plans: Poster and paper sessions.
Cathy Blackman and Barbara Bradley along with a group from the
Membership Committee will review the submitted poster and
paper proposals and select finalists. The OU SLIS paper
sessions are co-sponsored by the Membership Committee.
UCD
Timeline: Call for proposals shall go out in the late summer
(mid August)
The deadline for entries will be December 5. There will be 2
sessions presenting 3 papers per session. Friday morning,
April 16 (with 3 2-hour sessions) would be a good time for
student papers.
Suggestion: Mix student papers with
professional presenters to draw a larger audience.
Miller
suggested encouraging SLIS faculty to ask students to view
their semester projects in light of presenting at OLA. An OLA
representative could talk to students in Norman and Tulsa SLIS
courses to create awareness. Application forms for proposals
should be out early to reach a large group of potential
presenters. Beth Reiten, OSU, will update web forms. [Update
since meeting:] Charles Brooks will load the web forms on the
UCD site.
UCD will sponsor student papers and provide some money. OU/SLIS
will decide on the amount of awards. Summary: David will
request 6 time slots in back to back sessions and 3 poster
sessions.
B. The deadline for the ALA Salary Survey
is October. Mary Evans and Charles Brooks will work on a (pass
worded) web form. UCD will contact OCALD with requests for
starting salaries (Evans and Brooks will work out basic
salaries, means, median, and mode).
C. Copyright workshop
with Laura Gasaway. Workshop dates: December 10 at Norman
Public Library, December 11 at Stillwater Public Library, and
December 12 at Rose State.
Gasaway’s workshop handouts and
accompanying materials are excellent reference sources. Many
copyright laws and regulations have changed over the past 3
years, since her last workshops in Oklahoma. Each workshop
will have a maximum of 40 participants to maintain the
workshop atmosphere.
Rose State faculty and staff will have registration priority
until 2 weeks before the workshop, since Rose State is
subsidizing that workshop. Then the workshop will be opened
for OLA member registration, subsequently for non-members.
Hotels and flight arrangements are ready.
Melissa Huffman,
Michele Seikel, and Carolyn Warman volunteered to help with
transportation and pick up for Laura Gasaway.
Refreshments:
Box lunches for Stillwater and Norman workshops, Rose State
will utilize its own food service program.
Video recording
Ms. Gasaway’s presentations would require her permission.
Tape-recording the session(s) could be an alternative.
The
UCD board will check with her if she would accept questions
submitted previous to the workshops.
Suggestion: the workshop invitation should indicate the
different registration deadlines for OLA and non-OLA members,
so that neighboring state library association members have a
chance to register. The reciprocal registration fee
arrangements with KLA and MPLA should be considered in the fee
structure.
David will present UCD program plans to the OLA board.
Other projects for possible UCD participation and sponsorship:
OCALD Pre-conference or LED statewide database survey.
Intellectual Freedom Roundtable with a Patriot Act workshop.
D. OLA Conference 2004:
1. Programs
UCD has traditionally sponsored the
“Buried Treasures” in Oklahoma Libraries.
Potential
presentations for OLA 2004 in Tulsa: Special Collections at
University of Tulsa, World War II Posters; Greenwood
Cultural Center; NSU Cherokee collection; Oklahoma Center
for Poets and Writers. (Theresa Miller for OK Center for
Poets has agreed already to participate in the session on
April 16, 2004)
2. Ideas for future UCD projects:
Cowboy Hall of Fame, Angie Debo Collection at OSU,
QuestionPoint Virtual Reference workshop with LED.
Other suggestions: Groups sponsoring a pre-conference workshop
could present a summary / panel at a mini-session during the
main conference.
Patriot Act: UCD is planning to co-sponsor a potential
pre-conference workshop. The OLA Planning Committee indicated an
interest in the topic.
Tailoring Information Literacy to specific academic disciplines.
E. Next UCD meeting: August 12, Stillwater Public
Library at 1:30 p.m.
Meeting adjourned at 3:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Thomas Thorisch, Secretary
