Minutes of the June 8th meeting were approved.

Old Business

Committee Assignments

 

Electronic Communication Services Committee

Activity will be by e-mail (if members can't attend some can be included this way). Charles Brooks will be the chair of this committee. Other committee members are Helen Hill, Richard Page, Darcy Rankin, Judy Rigsby and Michael Strickland. The UCD web site is slated to be up next week. A presence on the Web page is good. Please funnel information to be added to Charles Brooks.

 

Workshop Planning Committee

Sheila Grant Johnson is chair of the workshop planning committee. Other committee members are Christy Ryan, Sally Shelton, Carolyn Warmann and Helen Webbink. The committee is leaning toward a workshop on evaluating web resources and copyright. The web workshop would concentrate on design not content. The Library Education Division is also interested in doing a web workshop that would handle content of web sites. A pre-conference or post-conference on HTML might be an idea (Enid does have a lab so that we could do this).

By the middle of November we will need a schedule for the OLA Conference. There is a preview that is sent out at that time.

 

Conference Planning Committee

John Rosenhamer will be chair of the Conference Planning Committee. Other committee members are Alan Lawless, Pat McCall and David Oberhelman. ACRL has responsibility for the fall workshop and we will have responsibility for the spring workshop. Someone suggested a meeting in either April or February (late March - OLA conference). We should start planning ahead for workshops, if possible, plan the next year's workshop (possible goal). One comment was made about not having enough copyright information and that might be a good workshop topic.

 

Salary Survey Committee

Barbara Bradley will be chair of the Salary Survey Committee. Other committee members are David Scott and Colleen Ward. This committee is a mandated committee that does not have a great deal of work. Most of the business can be conducted through e-mail.

 

Nominating Committee

Jonathan Woltz will be chair of the Nominating Committee. Other committee members are Charles Brooks and Donna Schwarz. Nominations from the nominating committee are due by December 1, 1998.

Peggy Wolf will be the chair of the Poster/Papers Subcommittee. Other committee members are Laura Bottoms and Judy Wilkerson. Poster sessions should be open for anyone interested.

OK-ACRL

An OK-ACRL distance learning workshop is slated for November 13. Please try to attend if you are able. OK-ACRL will have a guest attending at our meeting usually; Tom Thorisch. Cooperation between OK-ACRL and CUD was stressed, as well as co-sponsoring library workshops.

New Business

We will temporarily use the logo that the Electronic Communication Services Committee has come up with and look at others for the future.

The theme for OLA this year is Oklahoma Libraries: American Values.

If we can increase electronic communication among the membership we can draw membership in through this method. We should keep in touch with the membership, always stress that the door is open, and include everyone.

A comment was made that the web site should include information about the listserv. Another comment was made that we might have a membership form on the web page.

A comment was made that we should hold meetings in places besides Tulsa and OKC.

Please solicit members to help out by e-mail for those that can't attend the meeting. Also encourage others to become members of OLA. Consider talking to at least one person in your library that is not a member of OLA and suggest that they become a new member. Also encourage libraries to become institutional members of OLA as well.

A discussion followed about Internet filtering software and the new legislation introduced in Congress. The group passed a vote favoring local control of policies on this issue.
