Oklahoma Library Association
University and College Division
May 18, 2004
McFarlin Library, The University of Tulsa
In attendance:
Melissa Huffman (Rose State College)
Pat McCall (TCC)
Tamra Stansfield (TU)
Marc Carlson (TU)
Mary Evans (TU)
Michele Seikel (OSU)
Cokie Anderson (OSU)
David Oberhelman (OSU)
David Oberhelman called the meeting to order at 1:00. He
announced that meetings will be held quarterly during the next
year, coinciding with OCALD meetings, so that Evlyn Schmidt, our
chair, can attend. Stillwater Public Library will be the meeting
location on July 21st at 1:00. The Sept. 22nd meeting will be
held at Rose State, and on Nov. 17th in Tulsa. In between, we
can also meet virtually in UCD’s online chat room. David will
forward a copy of UCD’s mailing list to Michele, the new
secretary, and either David or Cokie will attend OLA Program
Committee meetings on the 3rd Friday of each month in Evlyn’s
stead. Mary Evans again agreed to do the salary survey this
year.
UCD will push back the date of the fall workshop to early
December, possibly Dec. 3rd, because David has another
commitment this summer, and will have less time to plan. At the
July meeting, he will do additional planning with Evlyn. David
talked to Cheryl Suttles at Integris and Wally at the OU Health
Sciences Center about participating in the workshop. He also
spoke to Johnny Johnson at OSU, and plans to contact OU’s ILL
person to participate. TSRT will co-sponsor.
Possible workshop title: “ILL for Non-Geeks”? We plan to make
the workshop accessible to librarians at all levels of
expertise, both public and academic.
We will hold 2 general sessions covering broader topics, then
breakout sessions on Passport/FirstSearch, Docline, Iliad, ODL’s
Autographics (heavily used by public libraries), and on how to
explain misconceptions & look up the status of loan requests for
patrons.
If we have a December date, we won’t have to apply to OLA
until September. David will see Evlyn at the Leadership Retreat
in early June, and will talk more about the workshop with her
then.
OLA conference evaluations come out Friday. One problem this
year was the lack of SLIS papers, even though OU students have
their conference registration paid for by the Membership
committee. C.C. Brown thinks there were more knowledge
management students, who may have been intimidated. It’s
probably best to separate the student papers from papers read by
OLA members. Also, there was a problem with the e-mail address
for applications last year. The poster sessions went smoothly,
however.
Ideas for 2005 Conference programs
Library security problems (popups, spyware, etc., e-mail
viruses)
Faculty status for librarians – tenure issues, faculty vs.
professional vs.
paraprofessional
Constructive means of approaching the powers-that-be for
raises.
Unusual job opportunities for librarians in Oklahoma
Improving relations between supervisors & staff

David thanked Tom Thorisch for serving as Secretary for
2003/2004, and the active members who participated. Cathy
Blackmon will be chair-elect this year.
Respectfully submitted,
Michele Seikel,
