I. Preconference Program with OCALD
Sharon Saulmon addressed the group on behalf of OCALD asking UCD to
sponsor the preconference program on reorganizing libraries to meet tomorrow’s
needs. The speakers for the program will be David Lewis, Dean of
Libraries at Purdue University, who will speak on organizational changes
in libraries today, and Lee Brawner, former Director of the Metropolitan
Library System, who will address new trends in designing library buildings
and physical facilities. The program will consist of a beginning
exercise, David Lewis’s keynote address, a Q&A session, break, then
small group case studies, Lee Brawner’s talk, and then a concluding panel
discussion. Sharon asked UCD to help market the preconference (emphasizing
how this will appeal to librarians and support staff interested in learning
about new job skills required, new organizational models, outsourcing,
and other topics) and to help suggest names for panelists. Francine
Fist, Mark Vargas, and Sheila Johnson were among the names suggested.
Sharon also discussed ideas for developing a student library association
aimed at middle/high school students. She believed OSLMS would be
interested in assisting OCALD in developing this program and suggested
it could be coordinated with the Sequoya Awards. The group then discussed
other ways that such a group might market itself (via the web, email lists,
etc.) and ways library education programs around the state could promote
it.
II. Committee Reports
· Salary Survey
Cathy Blackman had contacted ALA with her question about how to handle
those institutions that reported salaries for an 8- or 11-month contract
(whether the salaries should be adjusted to a 12-month cycle). She
could not reach ALA, but Barbara Bradley said that she and Pat McCall had
not adjusted the figures for less than 12-month contracts. Melissa
Huffman proposed simply recording what the salaries figures reported were
and indicating by an asterisk those institutions that have less than a
12-month contract period. Barbara mentioned that Kay Boies only wants
the median salary to report to ALA. Barbara will send Cathy the Excel
spreadsheet for the salaries Pat had created so that the new figures could
be entered in. Ann did remind the group that the salaries of specific
institutions are not to be released or discussed outside division meetings.
· Nominating Committee
Melissa reported that Cathy had agreed to run for UCD Secretary in 2002-2003.
A list of past chairs and secretaries of the division will be complied
and given to Melissa to help her find potential candidates.
· Poster and Paper Presentations Committee
David Oberhelman reported that the flyer for the UCD sponsored sessions
at OLA had gone out and to date 3 proposals had been received. Many
additional ones will no doubt come it closer to the deadline as they have
in past years. The second week of December is the deadline for submitting
names of presenters to Kay for inclusion in the Conference preview.
The committee (David, Barbara, and Tom Messner) will meet shortly after
the deadline to select presentations.
· Spring Workshop On Crisis in Recruiting/Job Hunting
Ann reported that Pat McCall has reserved space on the West Campus of Tulsa
Community College for May 15, 2002. The workshop will be a half-day
event, so no lunch will be offered. Charles Brooks contacted Shauna
McConnell from TCCL and she indicated she would sit on a panel. David
contacted Debra Engel of the University of Oklahoma who agreed to deliver
a keynote address on the recruiting crises facing public and academic libraries.
The group discussed approaching the Administration Roundtable to see if
they would agree to cosponsor the workshop. The group discussed other
potential speakers for a panel discussion; Melissa suggested a representative
from Human Resources at Rose State and Ann mentioned possible speakers
from the University of Tulsa. The group also thought it would be
best to contact Jeanie Johnson, Chair of OSLMS, for possible speakers representing
school media programs. At our next meeting the group will make more
definite plans.
· “Buried Treasures” Conference Program
The collections to be showcased in the “Buried Treasures” program at Conference
will be the genealogy collection at TCCL, the Native American collections
(such as Cherokee Rolls) and Tulsa Race Riot collection at the University
of Tulsa, and the Judaica collection at the B’nai Emunah Synagogue.
The group discussed possibly requesting an early time on Thursday so that
attendees would have the opportunity to visit the various collections during
Conference.
· Pat Wagner Program on Recruiting
Ann reported that Pat Wagner had agreed to do the program and all was in
order with the program planning forms.
· LED Sponsored “Celebrating the Web” Mini-Conference
Charles reported that the agenda for the July 30-31 mini-conference was
set and that now each of the participating divisions/committees (LED, UCD,
PLD, TESR, and Ethics) would be responsible for planning their individual
tracks and coming up with programs for the breakout sessions. UCD’s
track will be electronic collections, e-books, consortia, and licensing
of databases. The following programs and speakers were proposed:
o E-collections (Jim Hoffman, TU and Beth Freeman, OSU-Tulsa)
o Licensing and consortial arrangements for e-collections (Sheila Johnson,
OSU)
o Statistics (Dana Belcher, East Central and Tom Biggs, TU)
o Access issues (Tom Biggs, TU and possibly Francine Fisk, TU)
There will be further discussion of the programs and overall plan
for the program at the next meeting.
III. Next Meeting (Electronic Meeting)
Ann proposed that UCD hold an electronic meeting in November rather
than schedule a face-to-face meeting. LED has an electronic chatroom
that UCD might borrow for the purposes of this meeting. Information
about the chat site and instructions for logging on will be sent out by
either Ann or David. The date and time for the electronic meeting
will be Tuesday, November 20 at 1:30 pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
David Oberhelman |
