Cathy called the meeting to order at 1:05 p.m.
Program Goals
Cathy handed out copies of the OLA Program
Goals. She went over each of the goals and pointed out that
advocacy was going to be especially important this year because
of the turnover in the Oklahoma legislature. There are about
1500 people on the OLA membership list and it is important that
they get more involved in OLA. One way that OLA is going to try
to achieve this is to make local arrangements really visible to
help first time conference attendees. Jo suggested that perhaps
there should be a group dedicated to helping first timers fell
more comfortable at the conference. Cathy said that the
conference registration form will have a place on it for first
time attendees to mark if they want to have a mentor for the
conference. The Program Committee will then try to match people
up.
OLA Conference
Cathy reported that the Program Committee
loved the idea of having the poster sessions in its own room at
the Annual Conference. The Program Committee is also looking
for an opening speaker. They are currently exploring the
possibility of having either Bill Barnes or Gene Ambaum,
creators of the library comic strip “Unshelved”, as the Banquet
speaker.
Cathy asked Michelle about the paper
sessions. Michelle, who had agreed to chair the paper
submission subcommittee at the August 10 meeting, said that
nothing had been sent out yet because Kay Boies said that the
cost would be too much to bulk mail the flyer. Kay had
suggested that Michelle send it out on the OLA listserv.
Several people mentioned that they weren’t on the OLA listserv
and weren’t even sure how to get on it. Parker explained that
it was on Yahoo!Groups and Michelle said that she would check
with Charles Brooks about trying to put something on the website
so people would know where to sign up for the listserv.
From the Executive Board Meeting
Cathy announced that the OLA Executive
Board would like to have people use automatic payment for
expenditures relating to the Centennial Committee.
Buried Treasures
Gina reported that she had spoken to
Richard Parker, Assistant Director of Tulsa City County Library,
and he thought it would be a great idea to highlight the new
Native American and Hispanic Research Centers. Gina will
contact the individual librarians at these respective branches
and see if they would be willing to present the “Buried
Treasures of the Tulsa City County Library.” She will also
contact Kathy Huber at the new TCCL Genealogy Center to see if
she would like to be a part of the session.
Federated Searching
When Michelle came to the meeting she
mentioned that Evlyn Schmit was not going to be able to attend
the meeting but she really wanted to see an OLA conference
program on federated searching. She wanted a session that
focused on how it “really” works. For example, she wanted a
session that focused on how to use federated searching for
reference work and how it is going to change how we and our
patrons search for information.
Michelle mentioned that the Information
Technology Roundtable was looking to sponsor a federated
searching workshop in February. This is going to be a very
technical workshop that will also include the topics of wireless
networking and electronic resource management. The roundtable
would like UCD to co-sponsor this workshop. Cathy for a vote on
co-sponsoring this workshop and the group voted to be a
co-sponsor.
Linda asked if the IT workshop would cover
the need for a federated searching workshop. Michelle said she
didn’t think it would because Evlyn’s idea was focused on the
“use” of federated searching rather than the technology used.
There was group consensus to do the session. Cathy will contact
Evlyn about organizing this session.
RFID
Cathy announced that the RFID session has
also been put together for the OLA conference.
KM Seminar
Gina reported that she had received an
email from Dr. Suliman Hawamdeh, OU-SLIS professor, stating that
he could find another speaker for the afternoon part of the
workshop so it would fill the entire 9:30 – 3:30 time period.
He had asked if we wanted him to do the flyer and find the extra
speaker. The group decided that he should do these things and
also asked about what the workshop should be called. Gina said
that she will relay this information to him and ask if he has
title for workshop.
Salary Survey
Mary is working on the Salary Survey.
Cathy will check with Kay Boies and see when she needs that
information.
Next Meeting
The group decided on the next meeting to be
a video conference on November 2, 2005. Cathy will send out an
announcement later and identify the various remote sites.
Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 2:05 p.m.
