Minutes of Committee Meeting

Rose State College

August 23, 2005  

I.          Call to order:

            The meeting was called to order by Melissa Huffman at 10:08 a.m.

            In attendance: Melissa Huffman, David Oberhelman, Barbara Miller, Pat Williams, Danny Wallace, and Cheryl McCain.

 II.         Approval of Minutes:    The minutes of the July 19 meeting were approved.

 III.       Conference programs update:

• Melissa reported that materials for a workshop on lateral thinking would cost too much.
• Discussed “Bridging the Distances” program on videoconferencing.
  Helpful tips, desktop applications, troubleshooting, how to make connections, who to contact for help, and how to plan for and run videoconferences. Advertise that content will cover practical issues, not just technical aspects.
• [Pre-]Conference format and location options: ½-day pre-conference? Would have to be off-site (not at Adams-Mark in Tulsa ) to be able to demo the technology. Pros and cons of various options were mentioned. Do it via videoconference at sites around the state, originating from OSU-Tulsa? Check with the IT Division to see if they want to co-sponsor.
• “Instruction Coordinator” table talk—what one is, what one does, do you need one?
• From staff to professional librarian. Panel to talk about making the transition, how to go back to school in a professional program, “what I wish I had known.”
• 1-hour conf. session: ADA guidelines for web pages. Co-sponsor with IT Roundtable?
  Connie Van Fleet (OU) and Michael O’Hasson (ODL digital information specialist).
• We are co-sponsoring with UCD—Workshop of Knowledge Management, Prof. Suliman Hawamdeh, on Feb. 10^th, 2006 at Tulsa Best Western.
• News from the Program Meeting: Banquet speakers will be Bill Barnes and Gene Ambaum, from “Unshelved” (overduemedia.com).

  IV.       Next meeting:

              September 20^th, at 10:00 a.m., by videoconference. Will be led by Melissa at Rose State. Other locations will be OSU, OU, and OSU-Tulsa, and possibly Tahlequah and Broken Arrow ? Danny recommended doing a trial run the day before. Advertise the meeting on the OLA website to reach beyond the LED mailing list. Include more people, especially public and school librarians. Email personalized invitations directly to the education librarians.

  V.        Danny Wallace on SLIS accreditation:

              He is on ALA’s 12-member committee on accreditation. NCATE accredits the school library    media programs. Accreditation is a continual process, not episodic. There are no quantitative requirements or comparisons among programs. There are no required core classes and no dictated “skill sets.” Anyone who would like for OU’s program to include a doctoral degree should send a letter to the library school and the dean of OU’s College of Arts and Sciences.
