Opening:

The regular meeting of Library Education Division Was called to order at 10:00 on September 4 at Oklahoma State UniversityÕs Edmon Low Library by Danny Wallace.

In attendance:

Danny Wallace, Barbara Miller, Roy Degler, Helen Clements, and Jao-Ming Huang.

I. Open Issues:

Danny started the meeting with a statement that the purpose of this meeting was to discuss three things: meeting schedule, ideas for programs, and possible workshop.

A. Meeting Dates

The group has tentatively selected the 1st Tuesdays of each month as the meeting dates.

The next meeting date is October 02 via video conference.

B. Program Planning

LED has several possible programs to submit in accord with the OLA 2008 conference theme, keys to the future. The group has identified three areas for planning: learning style, the current state of professional education for librarianship, and ADA (American with Disabilities Act) compliance.

Lynna Ausburn, a professor from College of Education at OSU, has been identified as a possible speaker on learning style. The learning style presentation will be similar to the LED workshop conducted in the past spring.

The group has decided to have a 3-person panel on the issue of professional education. Each speaker from the panel will speak 15 minutes in the session. Connie Van Fleet, the President of ALISE (Association for the Library and Information Science Education), might give a good overview of the topic. Melissa can talk about professional education for paraprofessionals. We need to identify another person to speak on the education for school library media specialists. The group will continue to work on a marketing theme for the topic. Danny has volunteered to contact possible speakers.

Roy will contact potential speakers on ADA compliance.

C. Workshop Planning

The group had a brief discussion on topics for the 2008 workshop. The first area identified was knowledge literacy--how do we shift our focus from managing information format to managing information content in todayÕs rapidly changing environment? Libraries as a group study place was another topic we discussed.  Finally, the issue of information exchange, that is, how we can help our students or patrons to share their knowledge with their peer has been identified as a possible topic.

Barbara suggested that LED needs to change workshop schedule. LED had a workshop in April, which was 6 weeks after the OLA conference. Barbara recommended we move the workshop schedule from spring to fall so that the LED group can plan and work on the workshop throughout spring and summer. We might solicit more attendees if the workshop is held in fall.

  II. Adjournment:

Meeting was adjourned by Danny Wallace at 11:05.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 02 at various locations through video conference.
