The Polly Clarke Award
Excellence in school library media programs can only be achieved through the combined and persistent efforts of school administrators, professional media personnel, and classroom teachers. For this reason the Oklahoma Association of School Library Media Specialists (OASLMS) Polly Clarke Award is, if merited, given annually to honor an Oklahoma school library media specialist who has been instrumental in the establishment of an exemplary library media program which serves the instructional needs of teachers, students, and administrators. This award will not necessarily be presented annually.
1. To identify and reward library media specialists who practice
cooperative program planning
and teaching in an exemplary manner.
2.
To identify and publicize model library media programs in which the role of the
library media
specialist is to plan and teach with faculty, as well as to administer the
operation of the library
media center.
3. To further the development of school library media programs in Oklahoma.
Guidelines:
1.
The OASLMS Polly Clarke Award shall be presented to a building-level school
library media
specialist employed in the school during the year covered by the nomination.
2.
The OASLMS Polly Clarke Award winner shall be a library media specialist who is
a current
member of the Oklahoma Association of School Library Media Specialists (OASLMS).
3.
Nominations are to be made by school library media specialists, administrators,
library
supervisors, classroom teachers, or may be self-nominated. Nominations must be
made by a
person employed in the school district during the year covered by the
nomination.
4. The application should be completed by the nominee. On or before June 15, submit the application as follows:
Use the application form below, coy and paste into Word 97 or later version, email as attachment to Library Media, with "Polly Clarke" as the subject. If you do not have Microsoft Word 97 or later, save the application and attached documents as .txt files. All applications and accompanying materials are to be submitted electronically as described.
5.
Jurors shall be comprised of a five-member committee appointed for a maximum of
two years
on a staggered basis. The awards chair of OASLMS shall make these appointments.
No
committee member may
juror a library media specialist from his/her school district. The
committee members are as follows
: an officer of OASLMS; library educator; classroom teacher;
a former winner of the OASLMS Administrator's Award;
a building-level library media specialist who is a member of OASLMS.
The jurors will select a maximum of four
finalists from the applicants. The applicants will be advised of their
selection
at least one month prior to the award ceremonies at
Encyclo-Media.
6.
The winner of the OASLMS Polly Clarke
Award will be presented a plaque and cash award to
be donated by a library-related company.
7.
The name of the winner of the OASLMS Polly
Clarke Award will be announced at
Encyclo-Media each year. The recipient will be
recognized again at the annual Oklahoma Library
Association (OLA) Conference.
8.
The winner will be invited to present a
program at the next Encyclo-Media and/or OLA
Conference.
9. The winner will act as the OASLMS Awards Chair the following year, term beginning in June. S/he will be responsible for organizing jurors for OASLMS awards, tallying votes, ordering plaques and medals. The winner will also present the Polly Clarke award to the next year's recipient.
CRITERIA FOR JUDGING:
Since this award is to recognize excellence in cooperative program planning and teaching, these factors may be considered:
1. .
Evidence of well-balanced library media program in the areas of curriculum
support,
instruction, and administration of the library program.
2.
Evidence of cooperative program
planning in the form of an instructional unit submitted
with the application.
3. Evidence of professional involvement in the library media field.
