Call to Order: Ellen Duecker called the meeting to order at 7:40 a.m.
Secretary’s Report: The report was submitted by Carrie Fleharty and approved.
Treasurer’s Report: The secretary’s report was submitted by Yvonne Grady and approved. Yvonne noted a change to the account so that there wouldn’t be any service charges.
Chair Report: Ellen Duecker reported that the organization was looking at the mission of OASLMS. We were looking at tying into the OLA theme of telling your stories, Ann Prestamo is promoting this campaign for all types of patrons, professionals, to focus on libraries are a wonderful quantifiable source for information. We want to put a human face on our data. Collecting stories for Legislative Day, and the format will be on a CD as well as in print. Another of our goals is to increase membership. The social was a success, and the music provided enhanced the social.
Reports: OLA is at Encyclo-Media promoting membership renewal, OASLMS memberships, giving away the READ-Y’ALL posters selling pins, t-shirts and sweatshirts. Workshops coming up are Tech Services: October 17., Nov. 6-7 1st amendment congress, Nov. 10 Patriot Act Workshop on the practical side of this act, Nov. 19 CATS sponsoring a storytelling at your library. See flyer that’s being handed around. December 9-10 Lara Gasaway will present copyright conference as it relates to libraries in Norman, Stillwater, and Rose State. Legislative Day is March 9th. April 14-16 is the OLA Conference. Website of OLA is www.oklibs.org
Library Media Update State Dept. of Ed.: Barb Pfrehm spoke for the state department. Listserv is a good place to get information as well as finding out what grants are available. Discussion continued about H.B. 1480. Barb encouraged us to make our voice known. Develop a rapport with your legislator. Invite your legislators to read to students. Our job is to educate the legislators.
Legislative Committee: Jayme Seat reported that the committee was setting goals. Please attend Legislative Day on March 9th. If you want to attend than try to a parent to volunteer to help you. National Legislative day was an experience. Encourage you to become pro-Active. There will be a briefing session which will also provide a handout to give to your senators/Representatives that will offer key talking points. This will actively show the power of speaking your voice.
Web page: Kathleen Leinke and Mary Robinson reported that the web page is looking good, and that they have lots of new links. One of the features will be the award winners with a link going to those people.
AASL: Kathy Latrobe attended the AASL Affiliate assembly. AASL wants to and are responding to the funding for technology in schools. They also are working on a statement stating: School Libraries are important to the education of today’s children.
Reading Council: Connie Wise reported that there would be a S.W. Conference on Reading, and we could attend. Also, the Young Reader’s Day would be held in April at the Lloyd Noble Center.
Read-Y’all Campaign: The next photo shoot will be someone that will appeal to a younger audience, and is being sponsored by the Oklahoma Gazette for funding.
LSL Grants: There were 11 grants given to Oklahoma schools out of 73. Keep your eyes posted for other grants. Look for changes in Rate of Poverty. Watch for Listserv postings.
