AASL: Buffy Edwards provided a handout to encourage members to submit a proposal to present at the AASL 12th Annual Conference on October 5-9, 2005. She announced that a pre-Midwinter Leadership Institute will be held on January 14, 2005. She also reported on the Scholastic School Libraries Work! paper that can be downloaded from www.scholastic.com/librarypublishing that reinforces what we already know about the impact of school libraries on learning outcomes. AASL wants your input on important issues that face school library media programs. Contact Buffy at beverlys@norman.k12.ok.us
Program Standards Committee: Ellen Duecker reported that the document is available in draft form on the OASLMS web site. Margo Canaday and Barb Pfrehm presented a session during Encyclo-Media that was well attended. The current standards are the minimum level where the draft document adds goals to be Proficient and Exemplary. The document could be used as talking points when addressing your administration or as you self-evaluate your school library media program. Ellen encouraged members to provide feedback for possible changes and stated that the OLA Conference is her goal to present the final document.
Statewide Assessment Project: Ellen Duecker stated that library media programs make a difference in student learning; it is not just storytime and book check out. About 30 LMS around the state and their assistants will be collecting data to show “what we do all day.” The project requires the recording of random data and time on various tasks for a 15 day period. Ellen was pleased to report that David Loertscher made a personal visit to Encyclo-Media to attend the assessment session.
Old Business: Kay Boies reported that OLA Regional Meetings will be held around the state from November to April and encouraged members to attend a meeting in their area.
Buffy Edwards reported that AASL stated that having a national convention in Oklahoma City would not be possible at this time largely due to limited motel space. With the additional lodging being added to downtown OKC, Buffy believes that we could be considered a national convention site in the near future.
It was announced that the Library Education Division will be conducting a workshop to link secondary, public, and academic libraries on February 11 in Broken Arrow and March 11, 2005 at Rose State College.
In an update on the NEA caucus to delete the wording that addresses “Information Literacy,” it was reported that the action was tabled. Ellen Duecker reported that she had visited with OEA president, Roy Bishop. Buffy Edwards reported that she has spoken to AASL on the matter and that the two groups may reciprocate to allow representatives on each other’s boards (NEA & AASL).
Janet Coontz announced that her health had improved and thanked the members for the card sent to her from the OLA Conference. Janet won the Technology Education Award but was unable to attend due to suffering from a stroke.
Buffy Edwards reminded members that the OASLMS luncheon was at 11:30 pm today.
Michelle Robertson won the door prize which was a “Chocolate Basket” donated by Baker & Taylor.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 am.
