JSYK -- FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What is the JSYK campaign?

The Just So You Know campaign is a state-wide Marketing Plan to reposition and heighten the library's visibility within the community, to create greater awareness of the library's resources/services/programs, to enhance the value of the library to ensure the sustainability of public and private financial support, and to promote use of the library.

What is the philosophy behind this effort?

The idea behind this effort was to create a flexible, adaptable, state-wide marketing campaign for all types of Oklahoma libraries through which the efforts of each indirectly benefit all.

Who can be part of the campaign?

Any member in good standing of the Oklahoma Library Association may use the elements of the campaign to promote library programs and services locally.

Who developed the campaign?

The Just So You Know campaign was developed by the Public Information Office of the Pioneer Library System for use within its three-county service area. The Pioneer Library System holds a trademark on the slogan and the component design elements.

So, how did this become an OLA campaign?

The Oklahoma Library Association has a License Agreement with the Pioneer Library System which allows OLA and its members to use the campaign elements to promote library programs and services within the state of Oklahoma .

How do I use it?

The visual elements of the JSYK are available to download from the online OLA Toolkit. Guidelines for using the elements are detailed in the Style Guide which is also available in the Toolkit. When you download a JSYK element the first time, you will be asked to agree to the policies in the Member’s Trademark License Agreement between you and OLA. You may then use the campaign slogan and design elements in any of your products and publications that promote your library in the state of Oklahoma .

Does OLA care how I use the materials?

Yes and no. If you are using the elements as part of your in-house or local promotions, OLA trusts you to use them appropriately. If you are using JSYK elements on materials that will be seen by the general public (a billboard, for instance) or if you are producing materials that will be sold, the Marketing and Communications Committee of the Oklahoma Library Association needs to approve the use and design.

How do I get approval?

Contact Gane Diers at gdiers@pls.lib.ok.us.

Why does OLA need to know if I am preparing items for sale?

OLA will collect a royalty from JSYK items that are sold directly through the OLA Store or indirectly through it members.

How do I get JSYK items for resale?

If you purchase JSYK sale items through the OLA store, the royalty is included in your purchase price. If you are purchasing these items for resale, you may mark up your sale price as you see fit.  Members of the Marketing and Communications Committee will be happy to assist you in ordering personalized JSYK materials that you purchase via the OLA Store.

What if I want to manufacture my own JSYK Materials, using my own local vendors?

That’s fine. You will need to have your design approved by Gane Diers and you will need to remit a 5% royalty from your net sales to OLA.

Do I need to do all that if I am giving the items away?

No. The collection of a royalty applies only to items you manufactured for sale.

Do I have the right to share these materials with others?

No. Only members of OLA have permission to use these materials, and that permission applies only to the promotion of library programs and services within the state of Oklahoma.

What do you mean?

For instance, if you are an OLA member who is using the JSYK to promote your academic library on your campus, that is fine. If the slogan or design elements are picked up by other on-campus departments—the academic advisors, for instance—to promote their services, they and you are in violation of the Licensing Agreement.

What happens in a situation like the one described above?

When you become aware of the local situation, you should take steps to resolve the issue. If OLA becomes aware of the infringement, it has the right to take legal recourse.

What if I have questions or need help using the materials?

OLA will sponsor workshops each year to guide participants through the access and use of the materials in the online OLA Toolkit. Specific questions or issues can be addressed to members of the OLA Marketing and Communications Committee via the OLA website.
