Copyright for Librarians

Date: April 5, 2013
Time: 10:30am
Sponsors: GoDoRT, Ethics Committee, SMART

This presentation conveys what are a creator’s basic copyrights and what works are and are not granted copyright protection. What may a creator do with his or her works? How may others use copyrighted works via various exceptions such as fair use, the TEACH Act, the first sale doctrine, and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. How do these rights and exceptions play out in the digital environment? For example, how does current copyright law affect web browsing, hyperlinking, e-reserves, and images; and the library use of email, Facebook, Second Life, and other social media? Additionally, the effect of recently decided cases on libraries will be discussed. Some of these recently decided cases include Author's Guild v Hathi Trust and Kirtsaeng v. John Wiley & Sons.
